Fun read

Overall, I loved this book. So why did Hyde and Seek work for me?

The first sentence, “Babe, that your van?” and the following pages had to be the funniest opening to a book I've read in a long time. The thoughts running through Piper’s head were hilarious and made her immensely likable right off the bat. There were some really funny lines throughout, including one in which Piper was thinking that her general vibe screamed introvert, “Actually, I don’t think you can scream introvert, but it definitely mumbled it.” Yeah, that was great. The line that made my side ache from laughing and forced me to read it to my hubby at one in the morning came from a stylist about to do Piper's hair, "Mr. Hyde had a request, but he said it’s up to you. I, on the other hand, am saying that the choice is not up to you, and we’re just doing what he said. ‘Cause, Sweetheart, your man might be fine with a capital ‘F$&@ Yeah’, but he is also scary as a broken condom on prom night.”

The story flowed very well. Frost did a good job introducing us to the Hyde world. The guys were likable, so that’s good going forward. It looks like this is the first in a potential series of books, which means Frost not only needed to tell Piper and Jake's story, but give us a few glimpses at other characters we'll (hopefully) be seeing more of in future books. She succeeded in doing this without making the main story seem choppy. Intrigue was brewing, but the writer didn't jump right into it. I love reading the "courting" portion of a romance and since this one was both funny and hot I was glad Frost gave time for that courtship before the extra story conflict was thrown at me. I was ready for the story to escalate when it did and was pleasantly surprised by how it all played out. I read a ton of books and I am almost never surprised to find out the identity of the antagonist when I am reading a book or watching a movie. I read this book really not altogether sure how things would play out. It was so much fun to read an ending I did NOT see coming. So kudos.

I'm also a sucker for the "Big Age Difference" trope. Not sure why, I just know it works for me. This story, though, played out a bit differently than other books I've read with a large age gap between the main characters, but not in a bad way. Yes, there are about 14 years difference in age between Piper and Jake, but because of Piper's maturity readers are not going to be reading a book about the older man needing to take care of a much younger woman. If this is what you look for in this trope then you will be disappointed. But if you enjoy seeing a somewhat grumpy, jaded, thirty-something guy get reminded how fun and colorful life can be, and get that reminder from a delightful, yet mature, 20 year old woman, this story is one for you.

So what didn't work for me? Well, it's not really something that didn't work, it was just something that meant I had to dip into the whole "suspension of disbelief" thing. I read for entertainment and I like whatever the heck I want to like, not what someone tells me I should like. And because of this I am very good at suspending disbelief when I am enjoying a good story, and Layla Frost's story is just that: good! But that's not to say I didn't have to work a bit to believe a 20 year old would have it together like Piper. A mortgage? A successful business? Having enough experience in her short life to make elaborate wedding cakes? I guess none of that is unheard of, just definitely not the norm. I enjoyed the hell out of the story, though, so I went with the "suspension of disbelief" thing because doing so meant I could get back to reading more about Piper doing s*** to make Jake let loose those sexy as sin growls. Yum!

The other thing that ordinarily doesn't work for me, but did here, is first person POV. I usually avoid books written in the first person, mainly because so few writers are good at letting readers get to know characters other than just the one narrating the story. If we only know what Piper knows, how do we get to understand Jake without reading some of the story from Jake’s point of view? That’s a tricky problem a writer faces when he or she decides to stick with first person narration. Being able to fully flesh out all characters with only the observations made by one character is a challenge few writers master. I'm trying to be better about giving first person POV books a chance, but I still rarely bother reading a book if I find the sample to be first person POV. Lucky for me, Frost had a kick-ass opening that drew me in enough to keep reading, because she wrote one fun book I would have otherwise passed on. And Frost rewarded me at the end with a bit of Jake's POV.

I was going to give Hide and Seek four stars mainly because I rarely give out five stars. But considering all the crappy books I've read recently, I decided this was not a good reason to not hand out a five star rating and reconsidered my qualifications for a five star book. So here are some reasons this book is better than four stars:
1. Good editing. I can not tell you how annoying it is to read a book with a ton of typos, poor grammar, and misspelled or misused words. This is a huge problem with self-edited books and will totally kill an otherwise good story for me.
2. "Hey, I did not see that coming!" I'm not surprised too often so it was refreshing to come to the climax and realize I was not even close to figuring out "who done it."
3. The re-read test. I was lucky to read an earlier version of Hyde and Seek several months ago but when it came time to read the finished product I was a bit worried it wouldn't keep my attention the second time around. No problems! Each page was just as much fun the second time around so readers will get their money's worth each time they read it.
3. Well developed characters. I got a good feel for all the characters, not just the main ones.
4. Nailed the first person narration. Can't tell you enough how much I hate first person narration but Frost won me over. The first line intrigued me enough for me to keep reading once I realized it was going to be first person. It helped that Piper was a likable character so she was not an annoying narrator.
5. Hot factor. Phew, Jake is one yummy alpha male. And I won't spoil it for you, but I could only hope to be called into his office.
6.. I got a HEA with no cliffhangers.
7. No cliffhanger, but it did leave me wanting more. More stories of those hot guys of Hyde! Get your fingers typing, Layla, because I want more.

I could knock off a star because I did have to work a bit at believing a 20 year old could be as together as Piper was, but in the end that really was not enough to knock off a star. Taking in all my reasons listed above, plus the fact that overall I just plain liked the story, I have to give Hyde and Seek five stars. A fun, sexy read.

An enjoyable read with some sexy and sweet

This romance has some good things going for it. The curvy, sweet heroine and the alpha bad boy were a good match together. I liked that he was tatted, he even rocked a sexy man-bun, blond hair and green eyes, and I really liked that he was a mechanic. I thought some details about the h needed more attention, like her school life, but I did like her. She seemed mature at times (her own home, a business start-up, a car, etc.), but then she would act a little young to me. She's 20 and the hero's 34.

I also enjoyed how bossy, possessive and jealous the H was. He even does that caveman speak, grunting and growling "Mine." I thought this had a kind of KA feel to it, especially with how the H acted and talked. Most sentences ended with "yeah?" I think the whole caveman thing is sexy, but I wanted more from him. We don't get his POV until the last 15% of the story, and once I had that, I wished maybe I'd had it earlier.

He's sexy and alpha, but he's also sweet and very gone over this girl. A bad boy who wants good love, he's actually the first to confess love. He did put his foot in his mouth, though, more than once, and by the end of the book, I'm thinking, dude, get it together. At the end, when things start coming to a head with the relationship and with a baddie on the loose, I wanted them both to be smarter.

For me, the pacing felt a bit off. I'm reading and wondering why I'm not finished yet. Not that I wasn't enjoying it, but I felt like I needed more to happen at certain times and less at other times. The I-love-you's come at about 50% in, and I tend to not like that when there are a lot more pages left to go. So, then it was drama, with his ex, her wannabe boyfriend, and some crazy stalker at large, and other smaller things going on.

The sex was erotic and hot, and this couple felt sweet and good together. So, even with some quibbles, I did enjoy this and am glad I tried this new author. She has a nice feel about her writing, and I'd read her again. She set up some sexy, interesting secondary characters, namely Kase and Rhys. On a side note, the editing's fairly tight, and there's also a sweet epilogue.

New Author and Promising Series - ARC for honest review

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I am super late putting the review online. It wasn't that I did not want to write it, I was having a hard time explaining my feelings. Funny as I was going to write my review I read a few others and one person said they equal parts liked it and hated it and that was close to my feelings. But I liked it more than hated so I am around a 3.5-4 rating.

Overall, I really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone. I really enjoyed the romantic suspense aspect of the book but to me that was introduced a little late in this book. The end was a surprise to me and I think that is what made the book so good to me. Most of the time I can figure it out, with this one, the ending was a surprise to me. Also, I felt that when the H/h had issues they worked it out like real people for most of the book, and I felt that lent a little more legitimacy to a relationship between them. Many reviewers have compared the author to Kristen Ashley and I cannot deny I am a huge fan so maybe that is what drew me to the book. I can also see the rest of the series developing from this book.
Now that I said all the stuff I liked about it, there were a few things I had issues with. One was the “meet cute” of the H/h, I felt it was abrupt and as soon as they meet she is all of a sudden best friends with all of his friends. Plus everyone wants her and is trying to steal her away from our H, but it’s like she was hatched at that moment. Had she never met any men before that?

Also, personally I am not a fan of the age difference of the H/h. I think that is mainly because she did not seem to be a typical 20 year old. In my opinion there was no need for the author to make her that young, but I can see why since there several plot points like her in being school that worked well with that age.

Greg Lukianoff is an attorney and president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. His writings on campus free speech have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, in addition to dozens of other publications. Fantastic book - Unfortunately for liberty

Can't say it any better than Ken at Popehat.com (awesome free speach legal blog).

In Unlearning Liberty, Greg reviews the different occasions and excuses for censorship in modern American universities, marshaling a bewildering array of case studies. Some were familiar to me: the ludicrous reaction to posters at University of Wisconsin-Stout, the legal threats to critics of the administration of Peace College, and the entirely repellent tale of Indiana University punishing a student worker for reading a book about struggles against the Klan in front of coworkers. Many others were new to me -- and I follow FIRE fairly closely. Greg has a talent for describing instances of censorship in a way to outrage me anew even if I have heard of them before. (For instance, I defy anyone to read about the University of Delaware's frankly Stalinist reeducation program for frosh without feeling disgust and contempt; Greg offers new details that led me to put the book down and go take a walk for a while.)

But this is not merely a compilation of cases. Greg traces the history of campus censorship after the "political correctness" disputes of the 1990s, and weaves the incidents of censorship together to explain how different vaguely defined ideas (like "harassment" and "disruption" and "civility") are used in an unprincipled manner as trump cards to shut people up. Moreover, Greg rather convincingly illustrates how university censorship impacts the attitudes and tolerances of students, and explains why we should fear that students taught to submit to censorship and due process violations will not be reliable supporters of free expression or due process as voting adults.

The book "UNLEARNING LIBERTY" is an insightful look into academia today and although Lukianoff points to the many administrators that have run an 'underground railroad' of sorts to funnel abused students and faculty to legal remedy... there are far too many administrators and faculty who feel that it is their right to restrict the rights of others, punish the guilty without due process and destroy the careers and lives of the innocent.

The book chronicles many of the cases of FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) over a ten year period. Some will make you mad, some will make you cry. This book should be given to every freshman entering a college or university today... so they know what their rights are... where they can appeal if they find themselves unfairly under the administrative boot... and, most importantly, that they are not alone.

So, whether you are on the left or the right of the political spectrum, you will find this book quietly disturbing.... and a must read.

Out of the FIRE and into the light

"Unlearning Liberty" is a worthy successor to "The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses," written by Alan Kors and Harvey Silverglate, the co-founders of FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) and published in 1999. Greg Lukianoff has been President of FIRE since 2001, and most of the cases of free speech and due process violations on our college campuses that form the backbone of this lively and informative book, were referred to FIRE over the past dozen years. Since the problems of "political correctness" and the over-reaching of speech codes have been well known since "The Shadow University" and other exposés were published in the 1990s, it is very dispiriting to see that the pace at which freedoms are violated has not slackened. Lukianoff does not permit himself to be discouraged, however, and concludes the book with the hope that reforms targeted at making higher education more affordable may also fuel other reforms, including unchaining thought and speech on campus. Despite the fact that he earlier links the infringement of individual rights to the growth of the professional university administration, he does not, however, provide much hope or evidence that this is likely to happen. FIRE itself is one of the chief blocks to what seem to be an ever-increasing willingness of both campus administration and government to limit freedom in order to protect students from hurt feelings and foster civility.

The stories related here are chilling. They include, for example, an older student working his way through college found guilty of racial harassment merely for reading a book, an orientation program that literally trains its practitioners to stifle debate, several schools that have explicitly prohibited Christian groups from forming organizations thus depriving them of the rights of association while other kinds of student groups have free rein, guidelines circulated with syllabi that demand student agreement with debatable assumptions and graduate programs that expel students who dispute approved definitions of "social justice." Examples of such trends and practices are truly disturbing.

One of the most frightening trends, as Lukianoff's many narratives of rights-violations makes clear, is the creation of regulations and laws by the Department of Education and state legislatures that literally require universities to violate the individual rights of their students (e.g., the "Dear Colleagues" letter issued by the DOE in 2011 requires a reduced standard of evidence to convict a student of harassment, including sexual assault). Lukianoff even explains how a recent Supreme Court decision misconstrues the first amendment. The law of the land is itself moving away from protecting our liberty, an evolution this book interestingly links to the flagging attention to vigorous debate and critical thinking fostered on campuses where students and faculty alike are increasingly afraid of expressing themselves bluntly and clearly. We are in danger of failing to educate the next generation of citizens to value central freedoms.

My only criticism of this important and fluidly written book is its organization. Each chapter opens from the perspective of a fictional student first learning about, then applying to, finally being admitted to and attending a fictional college campus. The anecdotes and interests of the chapters follow those of this hypothetical young student, from censorship in high schools to hypocrisy in college publicity and admission to the excesses of orientation programs and infringement of freedom of association on campus. I found this structure confusing and would have preferred that the powerful evidence supplied by this book had been organized by a more rigorous topical method--e.g., a chapter on speech codes, followed by a chapter on the rise of the therapeutic approach to student life, followed by a chapter on due process, freedom of association and so forth. I also thought that the fictionalizing thought experiment that governs the book's structure blunts the brute reality of the true stories that it tells. But if Lukianoff's student-centered approach attracts more young readers, the loss of clarity will be worth the expansion of readership.

This book is admirably suited to either a one-semester or two-semester course in radar principles and design. More than that, it contains a good deal of information that's useful even to those of us who have designed and worked with radars for many years.
The common faults of written material on radar are either to focus too narrowly on one aspect of the topic, or to omit material on the assumption that it must be classified when in fact it is not. Edde's book avoids both pitfalls. He gives thorough, comprehensive information on all sorts of radars, past and present, designed for various uses, and leaves the conscientious reader prepared to think clearly about where to start when confronted with a request for something new and different.
Suppose you were asked to sketch out an initial design for a radar whose purpose is to track bird migration on the Atlantic flyway. Where would you start? What criteria would you strive to meet? To what extent could you hope to distinguish between types of migrating birds? What help might you hope to provide for keeping track of individual flocks during migration? What design techniques might be useful? How much of what kind of signal processing would you expect to need?
I don't know about you, but left to my own devices I could stumble around for quite a while contemplating such questions. To avoid wasting time this way, I would sit down and rapidly skim Edde's book again, cover to cover, taking notes on what might be useful ideas and starting points.

Approaching the modern age...

This book, 'Kant and the Nineteenth Century', is the fourth volume of a five-volume series on the history of Western Philosophy by W.T. Jones, professor of philosophy in California. This series is a very strong, thorough introduction to the course of Western Philosophy, beginning at the dawn of the philosophical enterprise with the pre-Socratics in ancient Greece to the modern thinkers such as Wittgenstein and Sartre. It has grown, over the three decades or so of its publication, from one to four then to five volumes. It has remained a popular text, and could serve as the basis of a one-year survey of philosophy for undergraduates or a one-semester survey for graduate students. Even advanced students in philosophy will find this valuable, all major topics and most minor topics in the course of philosophy are covered in these volumes.
Jones states that there are two possible ways for a writer to organise a history of philosophy -- either by addressing everyone who ever participated in philosophy (which could become rather cumbersome if one accepts the premise that anyone could be a philosopher), or to address the major topics and currents of thought, drawing in the key figures who address them, but leaving out the lesser thinkers for students to pursue on their own. Jones has chosen the latter tactic, making sure to provide bibliographic information for this task.
This volume, 'Kant and Nineteenth Century', starts where the last volume leaves off, as philosophy is coming of age as a discipline removed from the direct control and overarching influence of the church and, to a lesser extent, the politics of those in governmental authority. The world of the Renaissance and Reformation gave way to a world of continuing renovation and revolution, in America most notably as a start, and then throughout the rest of the Western Hemisphere and through Europe in many places.
The period of the Enlightenment, the few centuries following the Renaissance and Reformation, is often called the Age of Reason. To a large extent, the historical presence of the church was withdrawing, and the dominance in intellectual and social circles of a humanist, empirical and rationalist mode was now firmly established. By the time of the nineteenth century, however, the confidence in the rationalist model was beginning to wane, with nothing clearly taking its place (this has continued into the twentieth century). Onto this stage, the first major thinker to emerge was Immanuel Kant, a wide-ranging thinker whose greatest contributions were probably in the field of knowledge, reason, ethics and metaphysics.
Kant became the standard by which other philosophers would be measured. Hegel and Schopenhauer both dealt with responses to and reactions against Kantian ideas. Hegel's though became a standard by which history itself would be measured as a discipline. Following quickly was the rise of the Utilitarianists, Comte and Marx (whose ideas would not see their fullest political expression until the twentieth century). In Europe, the century culminates in Kierkegaard and Nietzsche (whose philosophy also influenced twentieth century politics, having been co-opted by the National-Socialists of Germany). Meanwhile America was beginning to produce philosophers, such as C.S. Pierce and William James. Jones also includes a relatively unknown philosopher, F.H. Bradley, who is little known outside of philosophical circles, but was important continuing the Hegelian legacy into the twentieth century.
Each volume ends with a glossary of terms, and a worthwhile index. The glossary warns against short, dictionary-style definitions and answers to broad terms and questions, and thus indicates the pages index-style to the discussion within the text for further context. The one wish I would have would be a comprehesive glossary and index that covers the several volumes; as it is, each volume has only its own referents.
This is minor criticism in a generally exceptional series. It is not easy text, but it is not needlessly difficult. The print size on the direct quotes, which are sometimes lengthy, can be a strain at times, but the reading is worthwhile.

Incorrect Attribution of Important Quote

In this fourth volume, Professor Jones once again proves more than able to take very difficult material and make it accessible and readable as well as entertaining. I would have very much liked to have been a student studying under Professor Jones.

My only criticism of this otherwise very helpful text is the attribution of the quote “survival of the fittest” to Charles Darwin on p. 206. While Darwin did use this quote, it was originated by a contemporary of Darwin, Herbert Spencer (1820 – 1903) in a sociological context. Herbert Spencer is not mentioned in the text. Darwin used the phrase in terms of natural selection and biological adaption. The use of the phrase by Spencer in the sociological context of human society has a much more ominous overtone. From the context of the dissuasion on p. 206, I believe that Professor Jones had in mind the implications for human society of the philosophical change in social and political outlook taking place at this time rather than biological adaptation or natural selection.

W.T. Jones did an excellent job in presenting a lucid History of Western Philosophy. We used these books during a one-year course I took in Philosophy back in the early 1970's. They were fabulous then and I am glad to have them back in my library now.

Great information & pictures

Very informative book covering literally everything about Killifish, the book is written in a very useful and detailed way but also in a writing style that is very easy to understand and learn from. I've read a few books related to these kind of fish but none of the others have even came close to the usefulness found in these pages.

One of the main things that I really admire about this book are the mass amount of very colorful and high quality photographs that are incorporated into different chapters of the book, they add a great visual aid to the information and it helped me understand the topics that are discussed in great detail. These fish are fascinating and the book answered all my questions that I had previously about them

Great introductory book on killifish

Although I've raised tropical fish for 40+ years I've never had killifish.. This book is a great introductory text that lays out all aspects of keeping them; buying them online, or raising them from eggs. The illustrations are numerous and well done. One of the best introductory books on any subject I've ever bought. Totally recommend for the beginning killikeeper.
