The hottest, comprehensive book on Spanish slang ever!

Of all the books I have read on Spanish slang and idioms, this is by far the best I have ever seen. It's quite comprehensive and well documented by country and region, easily accessible by Spanish to English, English to Spanish entries. One of the great pluses of this edition is that native readers from several Spanish-speaking countries contributed in developing the final manuscript. Thus, regional variations are clearly delineated, which makes this book so highly valuable. You can easily dispense with the authors's previously published book, especially the popular Street Spanish series, and make this your "bible" on Spanish slang. First rate! Indispensable!

This is James from James Spanish (the learning Spanish blog). Learning Spanish from academic courses is great, but if you want to travel, work or live in a Spanish speaking country you will need a bit of help to avoid looking stupid from time to time. Every language has its own slang expressions that can catch out even the most fluent of Spanish students. This great book covers a huge range of phrases, expressions, and idioms to help you understand Spanish slang.

The book introduces common colloquial or slang terms from many different Spanish speaking countries around the world, highlighting different expressions used in different regions to give you a strong understanding of the local language. What is harmless in one country may be considered shocking in another, so be sure to pay attention to the geography of each expression before you travel.

The book isn't afraid to show you some of the more rude or vulgar slang. This will not only help you to identify when someone is being offensive, but can also help you to avoid an accidental slip of the tongue. (Some words are dangerously similar and changing a single letter can change the whole meaning.)

Spanish is an extremely expressive language, and some might argue that it has many more slang expressions than English. Certainly the expressions are much stranger, with origins so well hidden that they seem obscure. This book sheds some light on seemingly bizarre phrases, and also gives you a more interesting vocabulary to use in conversations.

While you wouldn't want to rely solely on this book to provide you with your Spanish vocabulary it is a great addition to your reference library, adding plenty of fun to your learning.

This book is highly popular with Spanish students really seeking to converse while abroad, and it's not hard to see why.

In closing my review of this product, I'd like to share with you the three Amazon products that I have found most helpful in my pursuit to learn Spanish. If you are truly serious about achieving fluency, I'd recommend getting all 3 of them if you can afford it.

1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasent to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions entirely in Spanish. I use this one only because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish.

An interesting book for anyone who enjoys reading about early Japan court life. A good historical book on early Japan.

I have always had an avid interest in anything to do with ancient Japanese culture. Their haiku, senryu and Tanka are my favorite poetry forms. I also love their literature but I had not read this famous book (The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon translated and edited by Ivan Morris) until recently. I purchased it on Amazon for a bargain price.

This very enlightening book came from Sei Shonagon who was a court lady in tenth-century Japan. It is actually a personal diary of a woman who explains all the things she likes and displeases her in the daily life of a court lady. She comments on a wide range of topics such as nature and the seasons, the flowers she likes, the importance of good manners, people she likes and hates, the behavior of servants, the correct behavior of lovers and numerous other topics. This book has real historical value because it covers the everyday life of people who are part of the royal family as well as the servants and mistresses of court life in tenth-century Japan.

What makes this book unique is that it chronicles the common everyday life in early Japan and shows the emphasis on good manners and proper dress and attitude was essential to all from the highest to the lowest. This 411 page paperback book also has some interesting illustrations showing the clothes and houses of this period.

If you are interested in early Japanese culture you should check out this book.

Charm and wit

If you are interested in books that shed light on life in the old world, this book is for you! The striking thing about this book is that it really seems like Sei Shonagon (the author) wanted her work to be read by people of the future. It is almost like reading a blog from ancient Japan! She is very funny, and her cutting wit is relentless. This book is an absolute treasure, and this paperback publication is nicely presented.

Engaging, sometimes beautiful, but ultimately shallow

If Sei Shonagon were alive today, she would be a livejournalist. That's the overall impression I got from this book--it reads very much like a modern livejournal or blog, being a collection of random observations on whatever Shonagon found interesting, lists of things she likes or dislikes, and snippets or scraps of poetry. Shonagon's use of metaphor and imagery is quite beautiful, and paints an evocative picture of a world, life, time and society very different from that of the modern day. However, she herself and the social circle in which she moves come off as fairly shallow, trivial and self-absorbed, as well as grotesquely classist and sometimes even cruel (as when she and her fellow ladies in waiting send a mocking poem to a commoner who has just lost his entire house and worldly possessions in a fire from which his son barely escaped.) Of course, given her own social status and position in her society at the time, perhaps these attitudes are to be expected; however, they still are not particularly attractive.

Nevertheless her writing is very readable, engaging, light and witty, and of course it is of great historical and literary significance, especially for something that was, by her own admission, not intended to be circulated publicly. It makes me wonder if any of today's blogosphere authors will still be read a thousand years from now, and what picture they will paint of modern society if they are.

About the Author

Trent C. Butler is a freelance author and editor. He served ten years on the faculty of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Rüschilkon, Switzerland, and for twenty-two years as editor and editorial director for Holman Bible Publishers and LifeWay. He wrote the Word Biblical Commentary volume on Joshua, the Layman’s Bible Book Commentary on Isaiah, the Holman Old Testament Commentaries on Isaiah and Hosea through Micah, and the Holman New Testament Commentary on Luke. He served on the editorial Board of the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and edited the Holman Bible Dictionary. Dr. Butler has a Ph.D. in biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University, has done further study at Heidelberg and Zurich, and has participated in the excavation of Beersheba. 

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984). 

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

 

James W. Watts is a professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. His teaching and research interests include biblical studies, especially the Torah/Pentateuch, ritual theories, rhetorical analysis, and comparative scriptures studies. He is a co-founder of the Iconic Books Project. He had served as the associate Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2011).

 

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University. A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

I have not been disappointed by any one of the books in this resource set. They are a great tool for preparing sermons or doing research for school or if you just want more insight into scriptures and the world around them. I have found that this series offers a depth that I have found sorely missing in a lot of the more contemporary works. I do not think you can go wrong with this series.

Jenna is just amazing. I love her books. This one is her best one yet. Everyone has hangups about themselves. Something they always wish they could improve. More often than not, these insecurities come into the bedroom with them. When that happens, love-making can get boring, annoying or downright unpleasant. If you use the suggestions in this book, you can turn your lover into exactly what you want him or her to be. There are any number of reasons people have for disliking certain aspects of bedroom activities, but those can be overcome with a few simple suggestions. Just the act of hypnosis itself can be sexy. What I love about this book is it's so practical and straight forward. It suggests simple and well explained steps that are really easy to follow. The book, 'Erotic Hypnosis' was a concise yet easy to understand guide on how to use hypnosis to change your sex life. It was a breath of fresh air, and not what I expected at all. All of us have probably seen those movies and tv shows when a person is watching a watch or a pendulum swing in front of them, and some nerdy guy is saying in a monotone voice, 'You are getting very sleepy.' This book wasn't like this. This book gave clear easy to follow instructions for exploring hypnosis with your partner. My partner and I both found the idea so exciting that we tried this ourselves. The heat in the bedroom was just explosive, and I think it will change things forever. One of the things I learned in the book was how to work on making your voice more seductive. This book will be a tremendous benefit to anyone who wants to heat things up in the bedroom.

Musical criticism at the highest level

Sir Donald Tovey is widely recognized as the leading music critic of the early 20th century writing in English. These essays are all interesting, often provoking, but it is essential that you can read music as there are many notated examples. I have given this collection only 4 stars because these essays are all old (Tovey died in 1940) and many of his conclusions may be superseded by later research; nevertheless, they're all worthwhile if only as a representation of the best musical scholarship of the time.
