I would like to personally write a letter or send an email to Fred Pyrczak because he made learning statistics SUPER easy. I'm in a Master's degree program and I had to take a statistics exam to "test out" of taking the course since it had been three years since I took it in my undergrad. I was so nervous I wouldn't pass the exam and that I would have to push back my entire program just to fit in the stats course but I didn't thanks to this author!!! I tested out on my exam on my first try! He is so amazing. I mean, he gives you TONS of real life examples. There's no way you can not apply this to things going on in the world around you. TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLLY GET THIS BOOK IF YOU NEED TO LEARN STATS!

This book has both, and can change the way you grow, if you let it. I did and I am not disappointed. This book covers all relevant aspects of indoor gardening. When I picked it up and started reading I was in the top of the 85%, now after reading and putting into practice what I read. I am confident that i am in the top 15%. The 52 Lists for Happiness is even better than the first book

I have a copy of Ms.Seal's first journal book, The 52 Lists Project, and gave multiple copies to friends and family. I'm a social worker who appreciates the value of journaling, both for myself and for my patients. However, I personally struggle with lined, blank pages in narrative journals-What do I write? Do I write entries every day of what I had for breakfast? The "Meaning of Life"? How green the grass looked today?

The 52 Lists for Happiness is even better than the first book. I have to wonder if Ms. Seal consulted peer-reviewed research on the subject of gratitude journals (evidence based for enhanced well-being in many populations). These lists also include suggestions for acting on what makes us happy, and putting positive action to positive thought is almost always a good thing. I highly recommend it for yourself, and for gift-giving.

this is the nicest little journal to open on a sunday; the page holder is velvet and the edges are a rose-gold and it feels very luxurious to write in; it'd make a fantastic holiday gift also!

Outstanding Hand Holding Through The Rocky Start

I decided in November that I was going to begin making my own plugins....hopefully for eventual profit. Starting out turned out to be a VERY rocky road. In fact, there was no road. A lot of guys who know how to do it will help you, but you've got to get your own ducks in a row and make your own path before you can finally write that one equation that actually processes the audio. I found myself reading college thesis papers and stuff that weren't designed to teach to get the info in between the lines.

I picked up this book the second I saw it. I couldn't be happier. The author's RackAFX software and approach to teaching gets you making plugins almost immediately. RackAFX automates a lot of the busy work so you can focus on the fun stuff. More importantly, it reduces the learning curve so you only have 20,000 things to learn instead of 50,000 things.

There is a lot of DSP discussion and that stuff ain't for the meek. After one read through the book I learned SOME. Halfway through the book a second time and I'm learning much more. I think the author teaches it about as well as any one author can teach it, but I imagine it'll take 10 different books before I get "good" at it.

I'd imagine the DSP holds up for everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. Time will tell if RackAFX is the way to go for full-blown premium plugins, but at the moment I have soooo much to learn it's the least of my worries. I'm just thrilled something like this exists to prop me up during the learning phase.

Great resource for audio engineers to learn DSP & C++

I would generally wait until I've finished a book cover-to-cover before writing a review, but after digging into the first six chapters, I realized it's going to take me a while to get through this whole book, but for the very best reasons. I'm coming to this subject as a complete novice; with very little experience in C++, and only rudimentary knowledge of DSP, but I have found the text completely accessible, and Pirkle's simple overview of Basic DSP was worth the price of the book on it's own! The depth and breadth of the programming concepts is going to take me a while to work through, but I'm excited to do it and this is the first resource on C++ or DSP that I've found that really gives me hope that I (an audio engineer with little programming background) can learn these concepts and get to a point where I'm being creative with them; putting my own ideas into code and action.

Great book so far!

Great book that will help fill in some holes for many who are Studying DSP theory. In addition will introduce you to the RackAFX system that is used in conjunction with Microsoft Visual C++ 2008-2010. You may use RackAFX with other C++ compilers other than MSVBC++. You use RackAFX to help design the GUI while C++ is used to write the DSP code portion. RackAFX will automatically update the Code as you add Sliders, Knobs and buttons. There are many of examples from Delay, Filters, etc. The book has a great intro to the DSP math and will help fill the holes and clouds that many users may have as they delve into the Audio DSP. I'm still readying the book but so far it's been a great read into chapter 5. I recommend this to anyone who looks at many of the formulas seen in many DSP algorithms as this will help you understand them better.

About the Author
Joseph Jean Baptiste Laurent Arban was born at Lyons, France, February 28, 1825. He entered the Conservatory at an early age, taking up the study of the trumpet under Dauverne, and won first prize in 1845. His military term was spent in the navy on board the "La Belle Poule." whose chief musician, Paulus, became Chief Musician of the Garde a Paris during the reign of Napoleon III. He was the most brilliant cornet player of his time, and his astonishing performance and triumphant concert tours throughout Europe were the means of establishing the value cornet as one of the most popular of all musical instruments. Arban's artistic ideals, sound musicianship and invaluable instructive principles were perpetuated in his splendid Method for the Cornet, which as succeeded in maintaining the very highest position among similar instructive works and which has never been surpassed in point of practical superiority or artistic plan.

Great edition of a great volume!

This book is by almost all accounts the Bible of the trumpet world. It is comprehensive, and cognitive in its presentation. There are several hundred pages of practice score and a good amount of comments to guide.

This particular edition is a worthwhile purchase as it is spiral comb bound, so it lays open better, it is chock full of updated, editorial comments that explain and clarify some of the things Arban said that don't apply or possibly don't, and it includes a cd with accompaniment for the practices in the book.

Great book, well worth the price!

Excellent music book for advanced high school/College/ semi to Pro players. The binder makes this book much easier to use and flip the pages. If one can play all these exercises without missing a note. That person can play with any musical group anywhere anytime.

If you're buying one, might as well make it this one.

I'm a trumpet player. I've had the same Arban for many years now and it is on its last leg. I wanted to get a new copy since I still play out of it for many of my maintenance routines and thought, why not give this one a try. Basically you get a different binding and an accompaniment CD for the 12 fantaisies and variations. Other than that and the new cover, it's the same.
I wouldn't buy this one unless you need a new one or don't own one.

About the Author

Carl Branden was educated at Uppsala University (PhD) and the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, Cambridge, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of J.C. Kendrew. He has pursued a career in basic research, science administration (as science advisor to the Swedish Government), and biotechnology. Formerly Research Director of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, he is now at the Microbiology and Tumor Biology Center at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. A protein crystallographer with a distinguished academic career in research and teaching, he has made major contributions to the understanding of many biological structures, and is an editor of Structure.

John Tooze was educated at Cambridge University (MA), London University (PhD) and Harvard University (where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of J.D. Watson). After several years in basic research, he moved principally into science administration and science publishing, notably as the executive secretary of the European Molecular Biology Organisation, Heidelberg, Germany. He is currently Director of Support Services at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories, London, and editor of EMBO Journal. A molecular biologist, his previous books include Molecular Biology of Tumor Viruses, The DNA Story (with J.D. Watson) and the very successful first edition of Recombinant DNA: A Short Course (with J.D. Watson and D.T. Kurtz).

Basics of Protein Structure - Great for revision!

I used this book a lot for one of my undergraduate courses three years back. It's excellent at explaining the fundamentals of protein structure, it's written very clearly and the diagrams are easy to understand and appropriate. I found it particularly useful when studying immunology, the explanation of immunoglobulin structure, splicing, and mechanism of action was better than some of the other textbooks I used from the library. I finally bought a copy as reference and to aid revision of some basics while applying for research associate positions within the biochemistry field.

A Good Introduction to Protein Structure

This is a good protein structure book with a lot of intuitive cartoons on that. The major deficiency of the book is that it is slightly outdated because structural biology continuous making progress in recent years. There are very little in depth analysis based on the physical chemistry of protein, so it doesn't provide more insight into how protein functions. I give it 4 star because the pictures are really gorgerous.

An easy introduction to protein structure

This review refers to the second edition of this book, issued in 1999. The book, written by a noted crystallographer (Branden) and a molecular biologist (Tooze) noted for science education. Following up on an earlier edition, the present volume takes advantage of the enormous increase in solved protein structures that has occurred in the intervening years. The book is well written, clear, and makes excellent use of contrasting pastel colors to represent three-dimensional objects (proteins) on a two-dimensional page. One rather surprising omission is the lack of stereo views of proteins in a book about structure. These have become quite common in the structural biology literature, and I feel the book would have been strengthened by judicious inclusion of some examples.
The book, which would be suitable for an advanced undergraduate, graduate course or for biologist wishing to delve more into structure, begins with basic amino acid properties. The secondary structure elements of alpha helix and beta sheet are next introduced, along with some of the conventions used to illustrate structure in publications. How these structural elements are formed to build motifs, and motifs in turn are built into complex structures is discussed. Protein folding and flexibility are discussed, and proteins that assist in the process (e.g., chaperones, GroEL-GroES, disulfide isomerases) are highlighted.
The next several chapters deal with DNA structure, DNA recognition by helix-turn-helix motifs, and eukaryotic transcription factors. The various transcription factor families are outlined, with emphasis on their interactions with DNA. Next, the subject of enzyme catalysis is covered, using serine proteases as exemplars. Membrane proteins, signal transduction proteins, fibrous proteins and immune system components all have individual chapters that emphasize structural features in the service of function. There is a chapter on spherical virus assembly and structure. Two general chapters close the book: one on structure prediction and protein engineering and design, and a final chapter on protein structure determination, which deals with X-ray crystallography and NMR methods and studies.
