A bright light on the long shadow of rewritten history.

I lived through the Roosevelt depression. I was young, but since we had no TV, no telephone, no internet, I spent many evenings listening to adult conversations. Many men and women held the position that FDR caused the Hoover recession to become the Great Depression with bad money policies. This book is spot on!

Good summary of what went on.

This is a good summary of the criticisms of the government's performance during the Great Depression. Hoover and FDR are both criticized, but especially FDR. If you like the material I would recommend reading one of the bigger books the author references. Start it with an open mind.

Very educational book. Illuminates the facts of the Great Depression, unlike the fiction we are taught in school. Good examples of government and good intentions going bad and subsequent refusal by those in power to accept the reality of their failed policies.

Story starters from classic literature (and gorgeous illustrations)

Excellent storytelling prompts from classic literature, accompanied by beautiful, detailed illustrations. Willy (who is an ape) imagines himself in classic stories like Peter Pan, Treasure Island, Robin Hood, The Wind In The Willows, the Wizard of Oz etc....he describes the scene and the characters (who are also apes), lays the foundation and then asks the reader "what do you think happened next?" The child reading this may want to make up a wacky alternate version of the story, or it might cause him or her to want to hear the original, or possibly both. It's a wonderful storytelling exercise, and I do love the combination of vintage classics and modern language (Friar Tuck calls Willy a WIMP...made me laugh).... the only caveat I would note is that in general, picture books are aimed at ages approximately 4 to 8, and this one is really more suited for a child of 7 or 8. There are two or three longish paragraphs on each page of text, and the language may be too complex to keep a preschooler interested.

Discover the Adventure

Willy is a young ape and each week he walks through a set of magical doors that allow him to go on some amazing adventures, WILLY'S STORIES. On the following pages after a brief introduction, Willy describes some of these adventures and ends each section by asking a question of the reader. At the end of the book the reader discovers (if they haven't already guessed) where the doors Willy walked through led and how Willy is able to go on each of these adventures. As it turns out, Willy visits a library and each of the stories he tells are books he checks out and reads. The illustrations are engaging and humorous. I enjoyed the book and trying to figure out which stories Willy was describing. I actually was introduced to a book I had never heard of before (THE TINDERBOX). Overall, WILLY'S STORIES would be a good book to read aloud to a group of children or a fun book for a slightly older reader (2nd grade level).

Came for the gorillas, stayed for the whimsy

Willy's Stories is a phenomenal example of inter-literary references done right. Each page boasts a full-color illustration depicting pivotal moments from classic children's literature. Except, instead of the original human characters, gorillas are featured. Because gorillas, obviously. The thematic familiarity of classic works juxtaposed with this whimsical adaption makes for a very refreshing, interesting read.

The only aspect I am not really crazy about is the absence of the fourth wall, which I think was implemented rather clumsily. At the end of every story, the audience is specifically invited to speculate what happens next in the story, e,g. "what do you think happened then?" In this manner, it's excellent for specifically assigning writing prompts to kids. Since we home school, this aspect of the book will be of utility as our kiddos get older; I just would have preferred the prompts implemented with greater finesse, à la Ballad or The Whisper - both of which encourage audiences to fill in story gaps and provide their own continuation, respectively, but without any of the characters addressing readers directly. Just my personal preference for that one.

Age-wise, this was very well-received by my 4-year-old. He was not familiar with all of the stories referenced so, instead of speculating about the stories along the same veins as the original classics, he tied each one to its predecessor. E.g., when asked about the nature of the footprint from Robinson Crusoe, he decided it was probably one of the pirates from the subsequent Treasure Island page, etc. So, do not let something as silly as age recommendations deter you from this purchase.

About the Author
Jeffrey C. Alexander is a Professor at the depatment of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has been a Fellow at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies and at SCASSS in Sweden. His other books include "Twenty Lectures: Sociological Theory since World War Two" (Columbia, 1987); "Action and its Environments" (Columbia, 1988); "Fin-de-Siecle Social Theory" (Verso, 1995); "Neofunctionalism" (Sage, 1985), "Culture and Society: Contemporary Debates" (with Steven Seidman, Cambridge, 1990).

M. Jacqui Alexander is Professor of Women??'s Studies and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto. She is a coeditor of Sing, Whisper, Shout, Pray! Feminist Visions for a Just World and Feminist Genealogies, Colonial Legacies, Democratic Futures.

Mohanty is my hero

This book is incredible. Seriously. I had the pleasure of reading this book for a course and I'll admit that it is one of the only texts in my college career that I have gone back a read multiple times. Especially the beginning, and the essays about the indigenous peoples of north america or the Native Americans. This book opened my mind up on so many issues that I can't even begin to explain. It is dated, but it is still great writing a relevant. It has both heavy theoretical and practical which makes it a great text for a 4000 level class on global feminist politics.

Resourceful and Thought-Provoking

This is a challenging book, but as an edited volume, can be read slowly. A familiarization with writings on the distribution of global capital would be helpful, but if you don't have that background, the introduction to the book outlines some of the major points.
There are some great articles in this volume: one on sexualized flight attendant uniforms in Singapore, one on tourism being based on heterosexuality, one on the role of the cinema in shaping ideas of gender and nationhood, and one on how the concept of "sovereignty" applies to Native American politics in the US.
From my own experience teaching, I agree this volume is very difficult for most undergraduate students, but this is because they lack the vocabulary to understand what they are reading and to discuss it critically. The book would work well in a class that is focused around globalization and transnationalism, or in an honors level seminar.

Alexander is Amazing

By focusing the feminist eye on the transnational and "post-colonial" nations, Alexander offers an opening. . .a way to experience other cultures and transcend our own social locations. Her argument reveals that just because a nation is no longer under direct colonial control, it does not mean that the effects of the colonial mindset have diminshed. We all hold inherited ideologies about what we are. . .but that does not necessarily put us in a victim position. We all have agency, however we exercise this power in different ways. An amazing book that should be read so that the experience of feminism will be seen as what it really is, and not bounded by our ideas of "Women Power" residing in the white, middle-class agenda.

Read This Book

Some will Compare Pomeroy's work, Naked in the Road to Henry David Thoreau's Walden. But Pomeroy does Thoreau one better, he teaches while allowing the reader to truly enjoy the journey. Naked in the Road is part philosophy, travel guide, and adventure. The narrator, some would call him a thinly disguised Pomeroy, decides one day to leave his life of materialism and ease in order to find out what is truly necessary in life. He takes nothing with him, not even a name. It is easy to get lost in this book and you will find yourself wondering if you could find shelter, food, clothing, and a new life, if you had nothing to guide you but your wits. You will find yourself caring about this strange nameless man and you will find yourself learning from his philosophy. Follow the narrator as he reasons about necessity and distinguishes want from need. There is much original and truly inspired thought during this journey. Pomeroy shares his far-reaching search for the true meaning of life, and allows us to share in his search for the true self.

Pomeroy writes a compelling story that teaches us to live our lives in a more thoughtful way. Question what you have been taught, experience life through your own eyes, don't follow the unwashed masses-think for yourself. These are just a few of the lessons that Naked in the Road can teach us. If each one of us took this journey, we too could discover what is truly necessary in our own lives and we might just be able to discover the source of true contentment.

What a journey Pomeroy can portray. Mixing both survival adventure with introverted prose Naked in the Road teases with the question of why the narrator would cast off cultural norms, including dominant society, to determine what is necessary for existence. More importantly, the author forces the reader to evaluate all that being human represents; what is needed and what has been lost through the quest for the easy life. Pomeroy examines the common dismissal the average First World citizen has of the exhaustible wealth of the world; constantly questioning what resources used, labour toiled, and energy spent to form everday items such as a bottle of water. "The others are slaving out there for how many hours a week to fill their houses with this crap at the same time they're throwing it away" the narrator says of an easily fixed VCR found in the dumpster, pointing out both the wastefulness of resources and time. Along with the narrator's return to the material necessities of culture, Pomeroy also presents the need and importance of community. This book, by far, has been the best reminder that we share this earth and that everything comes at a cost.

Wow! Quite an adventure

This book really made me think. I found myself wondering about what is nature, why are we here, and what is needed to really live and have a good life? This guy is quite a character and quite a pleasure to read. I find myself wondering if his travels are real or imagined. I do believe that the underwater town is a real place and has quite an amazing history. I can't imagine the government damning up a river and flooding the town I had lived in all my life--it would be so strange to have all of the places that hold so many memories for me just cease to exist. What a rich history a scuba diver could discover while exploring such a place.

But that is really just a small part of this unique novel. Consumerism takes a bit hit in this novel. One wonders if true happiness is not to be found in material possessions, but lies elsewhere. That is what the author challenges each of us to discover. Could I do as the narrator does and give up all I have in order to find true harmony within myself? After reading this book I believe I am closer to discovering the answer to that question. Write on, Dr. Pomeroy.

About the Author
Carrie H. Kennedy, PhD, ABPP, is a neuropsychologist with specialization in military psychology and aviation psychology. She is an active duty Commander in the US Navy, a designated Aerospace Experimental Psychologist and has deployed to Cuba and Afghanistan. Dr Kennedy is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. She serves on the editorial boards of Military Psychology and Psychological Services. She has co-authored/edited 5 books, including Military Psychology: Clinical and Operational Applications, now in its second edition, Wheels Down: Adjusting to Life After Deployment, Ethical Practice in Operational Psychology and Military Neuropsychology. Gary G. Kay, PhD, is the President and co-founder of Cognitive Research Corporation. He is the developer and publisher of CogScreen, a computer-administered cognitive test used in pilot selection, fitness-for-duty testing and pharmaceutical research. He serves as neuropsychology consultant to the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr Kay is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology. Dr Kay completed his PhD at the University of Memphis. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology and a member of the Aerospace Medical Association, the International Neuropsychological Society and the American Psychological Association.

The Goto Volume on Aeromedical Psychology

Kennedy and Kay provide a rich, up-to-date edited volume; a valuable resource for mental health professionals involved in the various aspects of aeromedical psychology. I particularly enjoyed the chapters that survey the evolution of the field, from its pioneering history to contemporary practice. Other chapters range from ones providing comprehensive coverage of the scholarly foundations of the field to others rich with practical experience and guidance. This is, and will be for some time the goto volume on aeromedical psychology.

This wonderful collection of chapters on the varied subjects beneath the umbrella of aeromedical psychology, takes us further into the issues faced by the military than their civilian counterparts. More has been written on commercial aviation, as regards psychology assessment and pilot selection, but little has been presented from the military side. Many of the authors participating in this book are still active service men and women, from several of the armed forces in the U.S. This adds relevance to the discussion. And what they share can't be found elsewhere, at least outside military circles. I feel as though I'm front row center on everything being shared. I use the text in my Aviation Mental Health course at the University of Oklahoma. Nicely done!

Misleading Title

I had great hopes when ordering this book, but was very disappointed. I teach a Spanish course for students planning careers in healthcare that have not yet attained a significant medical vocabulary, but who have advanced skills in the Spanish language. I and am always looking for new materials that might improve the course that I teach. If this were strictly a textbook to teach medical vocabulary to English speakers, I would give 5 stars. I really like the format and general organization of the book, but the Spanish translations are not what I expected reading the title in its entirety "Building a Medical Vocabulary with Spanish Translations.
In the body of the chapter, no Spanish is given. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of English Vocabulary with a pronunciation guide, followed by a second list of other English words translated to Spanish with a Spanish pronunciation guide. Few of the words appear on both lists, and the lists of words translated to Spanish is about half as long as the list of English terms.
This could have been such a great text if the author had done better with the Spanish. Providing a haphazard list of Spanish words with a pronunciation guide does not justify including "with Spanish Translations" in the title. The author does provide the perfect context for teaching medical terminology, but she barely approaches Spanish. She does not address Spanish grammar in any fashion., and there is no mention of the multiple cultural issues needing to be addressed when treating patients across cultural and language boundaries.

About the Author
Robert N. Lussier is a professor of management at Springfield College. He has been teaching management courses for more than 25 years. He has a national and international reputation for his methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used both personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 400 publications to his credit, including Management Fundamentals 6e (Sage), Human Relations 8e (McGraw-Hill), Leadership 6e (South Western/Cengage), and others. He has also published in top tier academic journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Journal of Business Strategy. Lussier holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in business and education from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven. He served as founding director of Israel Programs and has taught courses in Israel.

I felt this book was a good resource. It presented so many leadership styles and situations to utilize them in. If anyone else is looking for a book that will help prepare them for new age management, this is one to keep.

Good text for Human Relations class.

I purchased this book for a class on Human Relations. I felt it was a very good text. It really covered the subject matter well. I did not feel as if I had to go outside the text much for additional information when preparing a presentation for my class on negotiation. Others in the class felt it supported the topics they had to present on as well such as emotional intelligence and assertiveness.

I would have save time and money if it was stated clearer, in a separate category on what edition the book was instead of in the title. That happens with the majority of the orders and you are not aware of that until you get it. It would be very helpful it this was taken in consideration. I scroll through all of the information as closely as I can view, no less put in the edition type I'm looking for with no help at times. I thought this one was the latest issue because it said it was new and then in condition section, it was very good. Some teachers will let you get a couple of editions dated before but this was a 4th when I needed an 8th. The time received was a plus but it didn't do any good when I have to send it back and try to find if another is still available.

About the Author
John McLeod is Professor of Counselling at the University of Abertay Dundee, having previously taught at Keele University and Wolverhampton University. He has practised in a range of counselling settings, as well as being involved in training, research and consultancy with many occupational groups, including nurses, social workers and emergency services personnel. The author of six books and more than fifty articles and chapters on various aspects of counselling and psychotherapy, he is currently editor of Counselling and Psychotherapy Research.

This book is an intelligent and impressive achievement.

Two sins of "Introductions to" books.
1. They treat readers as if they are incapable of understanding more than the absolute basics. References to further readings in such texts reflect a similar attitude
or
2. They fail to set the topic within a context. Rather, they plunge headlong into the topic via dollops of technical language and the citing of highly esoteric references.
McLeod's Introduction to Counselling commits neither of these sins. It is a highly intelligent book which treats the reader as an intelligent inquirer. I have recommended the book to other professionals, such as lawyers, who deal with counsellors and counselling. I have put it on my reading lists in the post-graduate counselling degrees conducted at my University. At the same time, I have recommended it colleagues who boast years of experience.
McLeod covers mainstream approaches to counselling such as psychodynamic, person-centered, CBT, systemic, feminist and narrative. He recognises that conselling approches do not come from nowhere, but reflect specific socio-cultural context. His engaging accounts of these contexts and of the individuals who articulated approaches which grew from them, provide a solid base from which to consider each theoretical development. At the same time, McLeod is interested in what elements tie counselling together. What are the root metaphors used by most counsellors most of the time?
McLeod is also deeply interested in counselling as an ethical pursuit. He is concerned with the nature of social and interpersonal power and with the moral principles which should guide theory and practice. He covers research, supervision, training and skills acquisition, the politics of counselling and the nature of counselling organizations. He even ventures into predictive statments for the next fifty years.
This book is an impressive achievement. The amount of information and the breadth and depth of ideas is deceptive because each chapter reads so well.
I have been in the business for twenty five years. I couldn't put it down!
