I took the American Literature CLEP test, and this little book had everything I needed to get a good score on the test. It's definitely worth it to get it - it's a quick read, without fluff - just straight to the facts. If you are looking for a compact guide to American Literature - this book will do it for you wonderfully!

Take it from an English Prof

As an English professor, I am always curious about the accuracy and comprehensiveness of such products. I have to say that I really like this one. It is very clearly laid out and all authors and literary movements are put into their proper contexts. It is not for deep study of course (as some authors are not represented and some works of the authors present that are of significance are missing), but if you want a quick, general overview, this is the study notes guide for you. I liked it.

I bought this book to assist in my studying for the English Lit GRE. It wasn't particularly useful given its lack of substance, but more importantly, I noticed multiple errors (incorrect plot summaries, wrong dates, etc.). Stick with Norton.

About the Author

Lt. General (Ret.) Michael T. Flynn spent 33 years as an intelligence officer. Before he was terminated from government service, he served as the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Senior Military Intelligence Officer in the Department of Defense. He has since founded the Flynn Intel Group, a Commercial, Government, and International consulting firm. He lives in Virginia.
Michael Ledeen is the author of War Against the Terror Masters and The Iranian Time Bomb. He spent twenty years at the American Enterprise Institute where he held the Freedom Scholar chair, and now holds a chair at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He lives in Maryland.

He Fixed Intelligence--Now Fixes Perspective on Today's Threats

About 10 years ago, I was sitting in an Irregular Warfare planning meeting focused on improving military and government intelligence. Lt. General Flynn was piped in through video conference, and he shared from his location in the Middle East a new plan called Fixing Intelligence. It resonated well with all of us Intelligence staff. We got it. It was a no-brainer. Now he needed to sell it to the rest of the military.

Today, Flynn is continuing the fight. He knew how to fix intelligence but had to fix something else first--Perspective. In his book, The Field of Fight, Lt. General Flynn lays out what he believes is required to win a war against Radical Islam and its Allies. This book is not about bashing Islam or anyone that “hawks” may point fingers at. It is directed to those, and the movements that support, killings and mutilations of those who have differing beliefs—and those who support, supply, and sustain such heinous acts.

First of all, this book is not a fear mongering right-wing play book about hate, political incorrectness, and far-reaching conspiracies. I, like Flynn come from the Intelligence Community. I agree with the items that he presents as being real threats to national security and global stability based on what I know and have seen as an intelligence advisor and as a regional expert in many topics he covers. This isn’t an us vs. them view, it is a sharing of what is going on around us from the groups committing or inspiring atrocities (Paris, Syria, Orlando, etc.) to our own internal vulnerabilities intensified by politicians, bureaucracy, bottle necks and stovepipes, that will weaken our strategy and our ability to respond now and in the future without change.

Although Flynn has spent his career in Intelligence, he writes his book in a humble way to share who he is and how his opinion is qualified. His intent appears to be to show himself as a real relatable person who built a career in service protecting this country. In an auto-biographical manner, Flynn builds trust with the reader so he can articulate his fears and experiences not just as a former military officer who towed the line but as a free thinking maverick and fellow citizen. An American.

The writing and global illustrations in his narrative are easy to follow. The read is rather short, which makes it appealing for most who do not want to dedicate time to a long and arduous history or political lesson to see the world from the lens of a man who has been in the middle of conflicts for decades.

Flynn shares his firm position but it doesn’t come across as being imposed. This man truly understood and identified gaps in intelligence years ago and did his damnedest to drive improvements. Those in the know supported it. Now, as he is trying to share perspective on what is going on around us, those in the know understand how:
- intelligence is being censored from those making policies and key decisions;
- countries like Iran are receiving token hand-slaps while the regime continues unabated;
- strategy is not being shaped properly on a national level to deal with today’s threats;
- messaging and understanding of ideology and behavior remains nebulous;
- intelligence collection and site exploitation is key, but in the context of understanding the adversary—not in isolation;
- adversarial marriages of convenience transcend ideologies and belief systems, which widens the threat aperture making it harder for decision-makers and the general public to fathom global risks to the U.S.

And now you can too. As we move to elections in the Fall, I highly recommend this book as a pre-voting read. Or for that matter, just a good bit of perspective based on the rigors of analyzed and distilled intelligence. It presents issues that are material to who will run our nation and how they will respond to events currently transpiring on U.S. soil and abroad that are known and unknown. It also shares in a way that readers can make their own decisions after hearing some thoughts of a man who understands foreign cultures, illicit intersection points, and how beliefs and ideology can be distorted to the point of violent action.

Congratulations, Lt. General Flynn on coming up with another recipe for success, let’s just hope that too many cooks won't spoil it.

The Crossroads of Our Republic

Several times in its nearly 250 years of existence our Nation has been at a crossroads. Looking back on our War for Independence, the Civil War, and WWII we know the decisions made in those tumultuous times forever altered the destiny of our Republic.

We are once again at one of those crossroads where the battle lines have been drawn, only this time in an asymmetrical war between western democracy and the radical Islamists and nation states who nurture them. In his timely book Field of Fight, Lt. General Michael T. Flynn provides a unique perspective on this war and what he believes are some of the steps necessary to meet this foe.

Field of Fight begins as an autobiography in which the author gives you a sense of who he is as a man and a soldier. This background information then provides the reader with a better perspective through which to evaluate his analysis of the challenges we face as well as the course of action he believes we need to take to meet those challenges.

The following are a few of the guidelines General Flynn proposes for developing a winning strategy in our war with radical Islam and other potential foes:

1. Properly assess your environment and clearly define your enemy;
2. Face reality – for politicians, this is never an easy thing to do;
3. Understand the social context and fabric of the operational environment;
4. Recognize who’s in charge of the enemy’s forces.

In Field of Fight General Flynn makes the case that we are losing this war with radical Islam because our nation's leadership has failed to develop a winning strategy. Further he opines that our current leaders lack the clarity of vision and moral certitude that understands American democracy is a “better way”, that not all forms of human government are equal, and that there are principled reasons worth fighting for - the very basic of those being, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

I’ll admit I’m concerned about the future of our country. As a husband and a father of five I wonder about the world we leaving for our children to inherit. I fear we have lost our moral compass thus creating a vacuum in which human depravity as exemplified by today’s radical Islamists thrives.

Equally concerning to me is what happens when the pendulum swings the other way. Will we have the moral and principled leaders to check our indignation before it goes too far? When that heart rending atrocity which is sure to come finally pushes the American people to white hot wrath who will hold our own passions in check? In a nation where Judeo-Christian moral absolutes are an outdated notion what will keep us from becoming that which we most hate?

As I stated at the start of this review, today we are at a crossroads. Once again our nation needs principled men and women in positions of leadership who understand the Field of Fight as described by General Flynn and have the wisdom and courage to navigate this battlefield.

In summary, although I don’t agree with everything written in this book I found it to be an educational read which will provided me with much food for thought over the coming months. As a representative republic choosing good leadership requires that we as citizens understand the problems and challenges we face as a nation. Today radical Islam is one of those challenges and General Flynn’s book Field of Fight: How We Can Win the Global War Against Radical Islam and Its Allies gives a much needed perspective on the subject.

We're at war, but few people know it... or are willing to accept it.

When I had heard in the news that Lt Gen Flynn might be chosen by Donald Trump as his Vice Presidential nominee, I was quick to do some research on Flynn and came across this work. Having worked in the intelligence community myself in the past several years, I was intrigued to hear what the previous director of the DIA had to say. I have read many books on the topic of Islam and I am glad I picked this up.

The big takeaways from this book is the (1) systemic manipulation of intelligence analysts' conclusions to fit political narratives (I have personally seen my work modified to "soften" the message/conclusions for x, y, or z reasons) and (2) Radical Islam is not a new phenomenon that spawned as a response to "American imperialism" as often preached from the lecterns of western universities.

If you have formed your opinion of Islam and the nature of the West's fight in the Middle East on solely what you hear in the main steam media (all sides), you would do well to read this book as a starting point into self-education on an incredibly complex topic.

There is no love lost between Lt Gen Flynn and President Obama, and Flynn's frustration with Obama's lack of leadership is clear throughout this work. Usually this political opining in a work such as this is distracting, but it does add much-needed context to decisions and events. That said, Lt Gen Flynn did a great job addressing a complex topic in plain language. While this is not a seminal work on Radical Islam by any standard, it provides much-needed focus to a conversation dominated by uninformed talking-heads on your flavor of cable news.

About the Author

Arthur J. Keown is the Department Head and R. B. Pamplin Professor of Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate from Indiana University. An award-winning teacher, he is a member of the Academy of Teaching Excellence; has received five Certificates of Teaching Excellence at Virginia Tech, the W. E. Wine Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Alumni Teaching Excellence Award; and in 1999 received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State of Virginia. Professor Keown is widely published in academic journals. His work has appeared in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Financial Research, the Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, the Journal of Portfolio Management, and many others. In addition to Foundations of Finance, two other of his books are widely used in college finance classes all over the country—Basic Financial Management and Personal Finance: Turning Money into Wealth. Professor Keown is a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Financial Management Association, and is the head of the finance department at Virginia Tech. In addition, he served as the co-editor of the Journal of Financial Research for 6½ years and as the co-editor of the Financial Management Association’s Survey and Synthesis series for 6 years. He lives with his wife in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he collects original art from Mad Magazine.

 

John D. Martin holds the Carr P. Collins Chair in Finance in the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University, where he teaches in the Baylor EMBA programs and has three times been selected as the outstanding teacher. John joined the Baylor faculty in 1998 after spending 17 years on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. Over his career he has published over 50 articles in the leading finance journals, including papers in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Monetary Economics, and Management Science. His recent research has spanned issues related to the economics of unconventional energy sources, the hidden cost of venture capital, and the valuation of firms filing Chapter 11. He is also co-author of several books, including Financial Management: Principles and Practice (13th ed., Prentice Hall), Foundations of Finance (9th ed., Prentice Hall), Theory of Finance (Dryden Press), Financial Analysis (3rd ed., McGraw Hill), Valuation: The Art & Science of Corporate Investment Decisions (2nd ed., Prentice Hall), and Value Based Management with Social Responsibility (2nd ed., Oxford University Press).

 

J. William Petty, PhD, Baylor University, is Professor of Finance and W. W. Caruth Chair of Entrepreneurship. Dr. Petty teaches entrepreneurial finance, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is a University Master Teacher. In 2008, the Acton Foundation for Entrepreneurship Excellence selected him as the National Entrepreneurship Teacher of the Year. His research interests include the financing of entrepreneurial firms and shareholder value-based management. He has served as the co-editor for the Journal of Financial Research and the editor of the Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance. He has published articles in various academic and professional journals including Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, and Accounting Review. Dr. Petty is co-author of a leading textbook in small business and entrepreneurship, Small Business Management: Launching and Growing Entrepreneurial Ventures. He also co-authored Value-Based Management: Corporate America’s Response to the Shareholder Revolution (2010). He serves on the Board of Directors of a publicly traded oil and gas firm. Finally, he serves on the Board of the Baylor Angel Network, a network of private investors who provide capital to startups and early-stage companies.

Of Once And Future Goddesses

As a recently-published author, I would like to express my admiration for the work of Barbara G. Walker. Of all the sources that I quoted from my bibliography, Walker was by far the most significant. The Woman's Encyclopedia is the most valuable book in my collection, and it represents a superhuman piece of research. The suppression of the Feminine and the patriarchal re-writing of history can be traced through innumerable references - from Christianity's assimilation of pagan rituals and festivals to the creation of the mythology of feminine evil. Walker, like Jungian analyst June Singer, believes that patriarchal religion is the basis for the suppression of women. The case she builds is frankly unassailable. After reading this classic study, one cannot fail to see the transforming power of the Mother Goddess in everything from A Midsummer Night's Dream and Finnegans Wake to Mary Poppins and The Matrix. Barbara Walker is a modern-day Wisewoman, and we can never have enough of those. In a sterile, left-brain, hunter-killer psytocracy, Walker's books shine like a beacon for those who still have the strength to dream.

This encyclopedia documents the subversion of global matriarchal cultures. It is immaculately well-referenced, much more so than the contrived versions of history that have been force-fed to us. There are relatively few works of scholarship that have the power to elicit such emotional reactions and defensiveness from the most privileged among us. You'll never look at fingers, menstrual blood, or religion the same way again.

This encyclopedia is so absorbing I got utterly lost in it for hours and hours. Finally someone has seen through the patriarchal smokescreen and exposed the hypocrisy and lies. Many times I found myself laughing out loud at some of her caustically humorous observations. I'm sure this must be on the Pope's list of books forbidden from the eyes of all good Catholics...Blessed Be!

About the Author
John Covach (Professor of Music, University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music) received his Bachelor of Music (1983), Master of Music (1985), and PhD (1990) in music theory from the University of Michigan. He was also a Fulbright student in Vienna, Austria, in 1987–88. The recipient of several teaching awards and citations, Professor Covach teaches theory and analysis as well as courses in popular music. Since 1993, he has taught large lecture courses on rock at University of North Texas, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and University of Rochester, and has lectured across North America and Europe. He is coeditor of Understanding Rock (Oxford 1997), American Rock and the Classical Music Tradition (Harwood 2000), and Institutions, Traditions, and American Popular Music (Harwood 2000). His extensive writings on twentieth-century music, popular music, and the philosophy of music have appeared in numerous books and journals. Professor Covach also maintains an active career as a performing and recording musician.

Andy Flory (Carleton College), a Motown expert, assisted John Covach at UNC Chapel Hill in teaching one of the largest rock history courses in the world. Flory has witnessed the textbook’s development―from conception through two published editions―and he has taught rock history to several hundred students in large lecture halls, online sections, and small sections at Carleton. He brings to this edition close consultation with Covach, classroom experience, emerging professional credentials, and youthful vigor.

Why to buy this edition

I am a biased reviewer, admittedly, since I am Byron's sister, and also the illustrator for the book. There is new material in this edition, as well as some new illustrations. This is the one to buy because Byron gets royalties for it, and does not for the older versions. It's a long story, but basically, this one is totally updated and includes some of the newer thinking in the field. Because it's a remarkable field with much new thought, having the newly revised edition is important, if you are truly interested in NLP.

Communicate to communicate

One of the most exciting discoveries of our times is NLP. This should be taught in high school! This book is an excellent example of how communication is different. It depends on who your are talking to. Are they a physical type or an emotional type? Do they communicate by audio, inference, or body language? The answer is yes and this book will show you that 7% of our communication is words and 83% is body language! tone of voice, facial figure! hand gestures and more. Do you really want what you said totally heard and communicated? Read this book!
