This book was so incredible. I don't have enough words to say how great it was. It taught me a lot about how you can go from being a person who doesn't care about other people to a person who would risk their popularity for others. I strongly recommend this book.

A STORY THAT GRABS YOUR ATTENTION!

My 15-year old daughter Elizabeth Hope Rose went home to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ on February 19, 2010. The medical examiner hasn't been able to determine the cause of death, but we know. Our Heavenly Father called her home so that she could be with the One she loved more than anyone in the world - Our Lord Jesus Christ! Beth was a living, breathing, walking, talking, passionate billboard for Our Lord - she owned numerous Christian t-shirts and wore a True Love Waits purity ring and red wristband all the time. (One of her favorite t-shirts says: I found Mr. Right. He gives me eternal life. He's Perfect! He shines like the Sun. He will never leave me. He Is A Prince! He died for me. He knows the desires of my heart. He opens the door. He Loves Me! - Isaiah 62:5 - ). Beth was not shy about sharing the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ and him crucified, nor in encouraging other Christians to be bold in their faith. I love her. I miss her smiles and hugs. But, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt where she is. Beth is in Heaven with the One she loves,Our Lord Jesus Christ! There is nothing like that to bring comfort to a father's heart! Praise be to the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and forever. Amen!

I read the To Save A Life book first, then saw the movie with Beth (she had already seen the movie with our youth group the week before and it was the last movie we saw together as father and daughter). To Save A Life is one of the finest Christian stories out there (Fireproof and Facing the Giants being the others). It deals with real life teen issues: the cult of popularity, family troubles, teen suicide, underage drinking, teen pregnancy, and self abuse or cutting while following the life of Jake Taylor - star athlete, popular man on his high school campus, full-ride basketball scholarship to Louisville, and the hottest girl in high school - through one crisis after another to a personal transformation through Our Lord Jesus Christ - the only answer to life's problems. This story can truly save a life! But don't take my word for it. Read the book and see the movie!

We need more books and movies like this one.

The story is well written and will touch you. I think if you are struggling with issues, like suicide, cutting, where to fit in, pregnacy, abortion and other teenage struggles, you may just be able to fit in to a character in this book and find answers. I hope Jim and Rachel continue the saga with these charcters. Can't wait for the movie! Jan 2010 Yo!

I always love Ms. St. Clare's books.

This one is the second in her Lone Wolves series, and is the story of Kia and Madge. I couldn't help feeling sorry for Madge for the way he was bullied, but I loved how Kia came to his rescue. It was nice to get a glimpse of Rowan and Craigh, the heroes in the first book of this series. Several characters were introduced in the first two books, so I hope that means Ms. St. Clare plans to write more books in this series.

This is a good story. I wish it would have been longer to get a little more into Kia and Madge. There was some questions unanswered. Hopefully if there is a book 3 maybe they will show up there and the questions can be answered. There was definitely violence is this book. There was sexual content in this story. The characters are developing but I don't feel they are done.

Suspenseful but left with questions

Great follow-up to our meeting of the intriguing Madge in the first book. There were many great touches in the book--the hot sex and sexual tension, the humorous bickering between Kai and Craigh, the suspense of recognition of the mate bond, and the dangerous suspense of the attacks against Madge. I love storylines where one party just can't accept that *this* one is their mate. The book's drawback for me was feeling left with numerous questions. I wish that the ending weren't so abrupt and we got more answers. I can't say more without spoilers but there were things introduced or hinted at that weren't resolved. Not sure if they will be answered later on in the series. Still, though, a good book that makes me look forward to the next in the series.

About the Author
SUZANNE BROOKER received her BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, attended by invitation the Whitney Museum Independent Study program in New York City, and pursued her drawing studies at the School of Visual Arts. In 1990 Brooker returned to the West Coast and studied life drawing with Gary Faigin at the Gage Academy of Art and completed her MFA in figurative painting under Domenic Cretera at California State University, Long Beach. The author of Portrait Painting Atelier (2011), Brooker currently paints and teaches drawing and painting at the Gage Academy.

Good organization, real practical tips, and a beautiful collection of landscape paintings from many artists

Many artists limit their selection of paintings in their books to their own works. This book, in contrast, includes the artist's own works (particularly when she is showing, step by step, how she goes about painting), but also works from many other magnificent landscape artists. (In fact, this book first came to my attention because the cover features a work by Renato Muccillo). The paintings are very well selected to illustrate particular points she's making. I love that the instruction in this book encompasses both the big picture and the nitty gritty (such as brush techniques). While many art books are geared to beginners, this is an excellent art book that I believe has a lot to offer even for advanced painters. I consider myself intermediate, and it's perfect for me.

Pair with Albala and Carlson, and you have everything you need on landscape painting technique

I would put this together with Mitchell Albala's book in terms of helpfulness and beautiful images (and in fact Albala has a couple of paintings in this one, and I love his work, but I especially enjoyed the works here by Renato Muccillo). Although I paint in acrylics, not oils, I've been struggling with techniques I relied on in watercolor that don't work as well in acrylic. Most acrylic painting books seem to focus on gimmicks like gold leaf or carving shapes in gesso, and that is not what I want to do. I've looked at some other books on oil painting but they often relied on wet-in-wet and/or painterly techniques, which is not something I want to do with acrylics. I could see right away that this book gives many examples of the painter working over a dry layer, which is what I do, so these are techniques I can use. I have seen many examples of so-called Old Master type painting that involves toning the support, but I had not seen any colors used for that besides grays and earths. This is the first time I saw someone toning with cadmium orange. Right away I wanted to try that. I also appreciated the description of a flake white hue made from 1 parts titanium and 2 parts zinc. I have just begun working with white (since it's a no-no in watercolor, I never used it until the past year or so), and this formulation I will definitely try. The step-by-step paintings of clouds are especially helpful. Lots of good stuff here!

In The Middle

This book begins slowly, seemingly buried under a thick layer of verbiage and beautiful thoughts, without much practical application. Like music, you just can't read about art technique for long without dozing off. I almost gave up, thinking she might make a better writer than painter. But the quality of the art led me on, and by the middle of the book, the author stopped talking and started showing, and the book suddenly came alive...her observations and suggestions were first class, even for me--a long-term landscapist. I think next time she should just drop the first fifty pages and begin "in medias res" as the Greeks used to say, or maybe the Zoroastrians, I forget.

About the Author

Chris Breward is Professor of Historical and Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion (London Institute.) In 1995, he published the first academic textbook on fashion, The Culture of Fashion. He has curated various exhibitions, including 2004's Capital Fashion for the Museum of London.

It is far deeper than the average history of fashion. Covers not only the main designers, but also fashion as an industry and its promotion and relation with mass culture.
Very informative, well written and thought provoking.
