A Renowned Master And Author At His Best: Still Current

Reuben Fine was one of the world's leading chess authors - as well as being a strong master himself -and was extremely influential and well-known. I bet if you asked 100 Grandmasters and authors, 98 would've heard of Fine. In this book, Fine emphasizes developing in the player the ability to analyze a position and to proceed accordingly. There are sections on mating attacks; combination play; how to handle superior positions, even positions; continuations of the openings; and transition to the end game. Maybe many of us think that the old books are outdated and stodgily written. Not so with Fine. I think that this is a clearly-written tutorial book, excellent for learning to plan, and more "solid" than say Silman's "How To Reassess Your Chess." If you see this available anywhere, BUY IT!

Still the best among many competitors

This volume by the estimable Reuben Fine, in my opinion, still ranks as the finest incisive overview of the Middle Game in Chess.

Since tactical motifs, combinations, and just plain not going periodically blind (as all humans do) are such key elements of the Middle Game, it is a topic that is especially difficult to write about in a useful manner.

The organization, thoroughness, and suitability to players at the club and middle tournament level are what makes this volume so outstanding. Written by one of America's finest and most underrated grandmasters, it is nevertheless completely lucid and full of practical insights that can benefit all players trying to improve their game.

The Best Middle Game Book

There are many good books on openings and the end game, but there are few good books on the middle game. This is the best I've read on the middle game. I never had an official rating, but I hold my won against "A" players. So I would say that this book is definitely useful for up to "A" players and probably beyond.

I used to play the openings reasonably well and could pull off some pretty neat tactical tricks. But if there were no tactical opportunities, I just drifted until the end game. But this books shows how to assess your position and what to make of it from there.

L'Engle uses essentially the same voice throughout the reading, which sometimes makes it difficult to know who is speaking. In addition, a slight lisp and a tendency to overemphasize sibilant sounds detract from the quality of the listening experience. This is an example of a recording where the material is wonderful but would have been more effectively presented by a professional narrator rather an by the author. My favorite book

I read Wrinkle in Time when I was 11 and thought it was the best thing I'd ever read. Wind in the Door and Swiftly Tilting Planet were published when I was an adult. I liked Wind in the Door, but it didn't have the "agic"of Wrinkle. When I picked up Swiftly Tilting Planet, I thought that I would enjoy it, but it wouldn't be up to par with Wrinkle. Boy was I wrong!
Planet was the most magnificient book I've ever read. I'm 46 years old and have read thousands of books over my lifetime, including all of Madeleine L'Engle's titles. This story is so inspirational, suspenseful, frightning, heartbreaking and joyful. It's just the best.
I use The Rune when I need a little "igher power"in my life as well as traditional prayers. I recommend it to everyone. It may be complicated for some children, but Ms. L'Engle doesn't write down for anyone. It can be a joyeous experience for the imaginative child and adult as well.
I think I'll sign off and go read it again right now.

My favorite of the Time Quartet

This is perhaps my favorite book in L'Engle's famous "Time Quartet." Set a decade after the events of the previous book, A Wind in the Door, Meg Murray and Calvin O'Keefe are now married and she pregnant when he is sent overseas one Thanksgiving. She takes her mother-in-law to her family's home for the holiday, but the mood of the celebration is shattered when the President calls Mr. Murray with dire news: the Central American dictator Mad Dog Branzillo has gotten his hands on a nuclear arsenal, and his fingers are stroking the button. A cryptic rune uttered by Mrs. O'Keefe sends the 15-year-old Charles Wallace on a quest through time itself on a desperate search for the link between Calvin's family and the Might-Have-Been that he has to change to save the world.

Although this is, like I said, my favorite of the Time Quartet, it's safe to say it wouldn't be as good a book without the previous two. L'Engle tries to make the story self-contained, but there's very little in this book in the way of character development, she relies heavily on readers' conceptions of the characters from the previous novels to drive this story forward. The book is also very episodic -- Charles Wallace goes Within various people at various times, and with each of them he experiences a lifetime. The book almost reads like a series of interconnected short stories linked through the framing sequence of Charles trying to stop Branzillo. As a result, there are multiple antagonists and protagonists alike, giving the book a very epic, far-reaching feel.

This is, like I said, my favorite of the Time Quartet -- I just wouldn't recommend reading it by itself.

Taking a stand against the "powers of darkness"

A lot of the reviews begin with the reviewers' stories of when they first read the book. Like them, I discovered "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" when I was very young, and I still love it. It is the kind of book you can read again and again as you grow up. Each new time it is read it can reveal new layers of meaning. When I first read it, I thought it was just an adventure story with a unicorn (a really great adventure story, of course). Then I began to see how it took a stand for love and against apathy. In the plot, Charles Wallace has to fight the Echthroi (evil forces). Writing this story was Madeleine L'Engle's own way of fighting the Echthroi, which really exist. Through her story, she warns us about not letting the "Might-Have-Been's" haunt us; she asks us to take a stand "in this fateful hour" against the "powers of darkness." If this is too mystical for some of you to stomach, then you probably have not entered this author's world, which, like the Christian world, is teeming with angels and demons. In this world, everyone must choose sides.
This is a book that children should have on their bookshelves. It may be a little to heavy for them at first, but as they get older, the layers of meaning will begin to become apparent to them. I have given all my younger cousins copies of Madeleine L'Engle books for their libraries. That is one way I know of teaching them how to care about the past-present-future of the Universe.

I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of ...

When I first received the book I was completely intrigued. I felt like I had finally found belonging in a group of like minded people where I had always seen myself as alone in my habits of wandering in nature and following my curiosity. I was also very intrigued by the unfolding of Keri's discovery of this secret group. My investigative nature kicked in and I could not stop asking questions about the origins of this mysterious society. I noticed that all of the drawings on the wander society website looked familiarly like Keri's past instruction sheets in her previous books. And then I researched the origins of the website. It was created in 2015. I felt the joy and curiosity drain from my face. This means that Keri created the website herself. I have to wonder if the whole story is just that.. A story. While I still find companionship in the philosophy of the book I must admit I feel a sense of loss as well. Sure people have been packaging stories as truth for many years. But this one hit me harder than I wanted.

Kandie's book of poems and lyrics has an universal appeal. Many of us have been, or are, in those sticky places that she writes about. It's a wonderful thing to be able to confirm your forward movement. This is an easy book to read; you can jump in anywhere, read backwards or forwards and be rewarded no matter what.
This book is well written, proofed and organized, unlike so many done by small publishers. I would expect nothing less from such a gifted writer and artist.

Richard Fumerton is the F. Wendell Miller Professor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa. He is the author of Metaphysical and Epistemological Problems of Perception (1985), Reason and Morality: A Defense of the Egocentric Perspective (1990), Metaepistemology and Skepticism (1995), Realism and the Correspondence Theory of Truth (2002), Epistemology (Blackwell, 2005), and Mill (with Wendy Donner, Wiley-Blackwell, 2009). His present teaching and research interests include epistemology, metaphysics, and value theory.

Diane Jeske is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa. Her teaching and research interests include ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law. She is the author of Rationality and Moral Theory: How Intimacy Generates Reasons (2008).

Philosophy can be a difficult subject, but when utilizing films as a visual aid it becomes a little easier. Editors of this text use ancient philosopher's writings in conjunction with films such as "Back to the Future". This text utilizes examples from films to help the reader understand the concepts.

Stunning book!

This is a stunning book for anyone interested in angels and their place in major works of art and literature throughout time. The fold out pages are like having your own sanctuary for prayer and mediatation! The artwork is beautifully reproduced and is the true focus, but much information regarding angels, based on those who intimately know/knew them is a special bonus. This book is one of those gems that has to be seen; words just can't adequately convey the beauty and inspiration contained within it!

Angels are mentioned numerous times in the old testament. Angels also played an important role in the life of Jesus. They are mentioned 13 times in the gospels. And Jesus said a good deal about angels; 12 times. . . . . So I searched for a book befitting these glorious spirits. Not cherubs or talisman beings. But rather the virtuous hierarchal heavenly hosts.

There are untold numbers of various books about all sorts of things Angelic. Alot of it new age communications. Other which propose to "know" the detailed analysis of the specific nature of angels (sure).

Then I found this gem. An elegant book with hundreds of clear large reproductions. From old masters to contemporary artists: Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Botticinis, Kandinsky, Klee, Chagal, Thayer, Jin,. and dozens more. The list of artists is incredible.

Descriptive text concerns Archangels, heavenly angels, guardian, islamic, fallen.

very fast and enjoyable read.

It's interesting how your likes and dislikes change with age. When I read it the first time in the 70s, I loved it. This time around it was enjoyable but not as exciting. I think being from Fort Worth and recognizing landmarks may have influenced me. However, it is a very fast and enjoyable read.....particularly if you are a golf fan.

This book is a fast read and a completely irreverant and bawdy look at the inside world of Pro Golf. I had to set it down so many times to wipe my eyes from laughing so hard that it interrupted the thoughts...well nearly. There is a character in it who just can't play the game at the level of his Pro buddies and his string of epiphets are of legendary friends who I used to play with. Even down to my friend throwing his golf bag into a lake in Davis, Ca. "...blasted thinrodoit, rummy, farking, recalcitrant morunetated, gibble strak!!Dipple f*&^ing grunt!" among others...as his ball sliced off through the trees into the next fairway. GREAT READ. I would like to add the writer skilfully added a personal touch of troubles in his life and a great ending.

This book is first and foremost funny. Even when describing tragic events, the word choices are designed to make you laugh out loud.

Secondly, it is a good book about how the PGA tour was before a win made you a millionaire, and three tenths did the same. The golf story is well paced and drives the narrative forward.
