Dynamite account of Botswana cancer hospital

Anyone interested in medical anthropology can use this thoughtful and observant book. Livingston is the daughter of an oncologist and she states in the introduction: "In the face of many deaths I have witnessed since childhood, I have also questioned oncology's rituals, its liturgy, and the excesses to which blind faith and desperation can lead. . . . [In Botswana] I came to understand that while cancer with oncology was awful, cancer without oncology could be obscene."

She puts the things she observes in the context of rising cancer rates in Africa and general unavailability of treatment, especially given forced-by-IMF privatization and expensive cancer drug patents. In a still-public hospital in Botswana which at least has an ethos of caring and an excellent oncologist, Livingston is, as she realizes, in one of the better possible settings in the environment, but the hospital staff struggles mightily with limited resources, hordes of patients, lack of treatment drugs and palliative drugs, and in general tremendous difficulties. How the patients and the staff manage and conceptualize things is astutely observed.

Yet at the end the book leaves me touched, yes, but also angry about the marginalization of African health care and disease and about the drug patent system, as well as somewhat frustrated at how ephemeral any local gains can be without any sort of steady or rational progress, but grateful for people who are willing to deal with things as best they can regardless of that. And grateful for this fine book.

This is an amazing, fascinating

This is an amazing, fascinating, heart wrenching book. A colleague recommended it to me for a class I'm teaching on Global Health and Development. Since I have tended to focus on general development more than health studies, I got a copy of this and was totally blown away when I read it. Great book for anyone interested in these issues!

Great Story

Pauline Gedge is such a talented writer. I've only read two of her books so far, this and The Scroll of Saqqara (a/k/a Mirage), and I'm so impressed with her ability to paint a scene.

This book is so nicely written, it is a joy to read. It was, for its time (it was originally published in 1977) considered historically accurate. It is the story of Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose I, of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty, as it was known in the 1970’s. Hatshepsut must have been an extraordinary child; she certainly was an extraordinary adult. When she was a teen, her father proclaimed to the court that she was to be his successor, but instead, she wound up queen and wife to his son (by a concubine) the ineffectual Thutmose II. Thutmose II died young, leaving Hatshepsut with a daughter and Egypt with a son by a concubine, the child Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut, as was typical and acceptable in Egypt, remained in power as regent for the child king, but then later she declared herself king (there was no word in the ancient Egyptian language for “queen” either as the wife of a king or as a female ruler) with the young Thutmose III as her junior co-regent (there were numerous instances of co-regents in Egypt, but they were typically father and son). She is urged to have Thutmose III killed, but she refuses. He gains power; and she knows her time is limited.

However, over the years, we have not only learned a lot about ancient Egypt, but we have also learned how gender-biased earlier theories were. For instance, this book holds with the old belief that Thutmose III hated Hatshepsut and objected to a female overshadowing him, and he couldn't wait to kill her and take over Egypt and destroy her monuments. Hatshepsut actually lived to a ripe old age, by ancient standards, and there is no reason to suspect anything other than a natural death.

More about Hatshepsut for those interested: Her great successes are shown in the book. There are records of her leading a military campaign in Nubia, but most of her reign was peaceful and prosperous. She built or repaired temples across Egypt. She sent explorers to find the long-lost, fabled land of Punt; they returned with amazing riches and reestablished trade for luxury goods to be brought into Egypt. And, of course, she built the most amazing and beautiful sight in all of Egypt: her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. She was, all in all, a great ruler and her reign was very successful.

Various Egyptologists, Peter Dorman to name one in particular, have proven that Hatshepsut and Thutmose III coexisted quite peacefully throughout her long reign. Immediately after her death, he completed several monuments she had started, leaving her name and image intact, and leaving images of the two of them together with him as the subordinate. He did usurp some (but not all) of her monuments, but not until about 20 years after her death and his full succession. He was hardly the first or the last pharaoh to do something like that (Ramesses II recut monuments and put his name on just about anything he could). Thutmose III may have simply desired, at the end of his life, to absorb her reign into his, or there may have been a dynastic dispute as to who would succeed him (I always thought his son, Amenhotep II, comes across as an arrogant, incompetent jerk), or there may be other reasons we don't know about.

But all the evidence is that Hatshepsut nurtured the young Thutmose III and supported him; she just remained the primary king while he was junior to her. Why that happened, we don’t know, but she certainly could not have claimed the kingship without support of the court. To later generations, she may simply have been remembered through Thutmose III’s and Amenhotep II’s propaganda as only a regent to the child king. The fact remains that she could have had Thutmose III done away with at any time, and she chose not to.

There were several other female kings before and after Hatshepsut, but she is simply the best known. There even exists a Second Dynasty inscription (reign of Nynetjer, if I remember correctly) that proclaims that it was decided that a woman could become king. Hatshepsut, in fact, was the last (for a while) in a long line of very prominent and powerful women. I’ll just mention one: her great-grandmother, Ahmose-Nefertari, the long-time regent for her son, was still depicted by his side until her death, many years after he reached adulthood. She was deified and worshipped as a goddess for several hundred years.

One thing that was quite unknown when the myth of his woman-hating vengeance was originally created was that Thutmose III built his mortuary temple subsidiary to Hatshepsut’s. It was so badly destroyed, it was until quite recently believed to be a ruined part of her temple. I don't see the logic in him building his temple in that location if he hated her.

Still, this book is beautifully written and a lovely story. It should just be kept in mind that it's fiction and not history. It tells much of the tale of a glorious ruler, although it gives her a sadder end than she deserves.

African Epicness!!!

If you love ancient history, especially the wonderful Egyptians, then this book is just what you need. What it lacks in characterization it makes up for in sheer fun. A fast read, and though it can hardly be faithful to history, Hatshepsut is just as one might imagine her to be: lovely as the dawn yet cold as the night, drawing you into herself yet keeping everyone at a distance. I feel so much more could have been done with her character, as her relationship with Senmut left much wanting, but the book was already long enough since it covered her entire lifetime. The story did get maddening at times and required more than normal suspension of disbelief, but it was absolutely fun, the detail was exquisite, the battle scenes well drawn, and the characters were full of life. Gedge is a wonderful writer. This is my first book of hers, but I will definitely be reading more of her.

Good story, but the digital transformation was a bit rough

I read this book at least 15 years ago, and it still holds up on a second reading. Recent discoveries in Egypt undercut some of the premises, but the overall story is still compelling. Hatshepsut is one of the more interesting figures in Egyptian history, being both female and pharaoh, and Gedge is masterful in taking the bits that we actually do know about her (for example from what still exists on the walls of her temple) and weaving them into a cohesive fictional biography. She puts in a lot of details about ancient Egypt without making them sound like a lesson or a guidebook.

It does look like the the original was scanned and not copy edited. There are many errors, such as periods in the middle of a sentence, using one word when another was clearly intended (most hilariously, Gots for Gods a couple of times.) Still, worth the price.

Highly recommend for people interested in ancient Egypt.

An Average book for the Average GMAT Test-Taker...not for students trying to score 650-plus.

I am a Harvard grad (class of 02'), professional GMAT tutor and 99% GMAT scorer. I know this complex, intricate test inside-out, but at the same time, I'm always learning, which is why it continues to fascinate me.

As I expected when I ordered it, this book is just OK; I would recommend it for basic strategies and low/average GMAT scorers only. Unfortunately, the shiny gold writing on the cover is the most impressive thing about it. Any attempt to write an "all in one" guide to a test as complex as the GMAT is destined to be at least a partial failure, and this new 2017 edition is proof positive that simpler does not always mean better.

There is some good news: I can confirm that I was able to register with Princeton Review and access the online content, which includes 6 practice CATs. However, there are thousands of official GMAT questions,1,500 of which are free via the GMAT Prep software, so I don't see the need for any GMAT student to practice on non-authentic questions. The Official GMAT guides are lacking in strategy, however, and this is where other books such as this one will come into play. Unfortunately, much of this book is filled with basic facts and formulas, rather than GMAT strategies, which is why I can more strongly recommend the books from the Manhattan GMAT Series, as well as the PowerScore Critical Reading Bible and Critical Reasoning Bible.

Basically, Princeton Review (full disclosure: my former employer) and Kaplan are the Burger King and McDonald's of the test-prep world. You might leave feeling full of knowledge, but it's mostly empty calories.

Any GMAT self-studier can tell you that there is no one book that can prepare you for the GMAT. Yes, you should start with the Official Guides, because you should stick to official questions whenever possible, but for those of us who are self-studying, no one book is enough.

Why are the 2017 Official Guides the very best place to start your GMAT preparation, other than the free GMATPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GMAT, because the book is written by the test-maker and uses actual, retired GMAT questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.

Pro tip: You can take each of the 6 GMAT Prep CATs more than once, because the GMAT is an adaptive test (it adjusts the difficulty level of later questions based on your previous responses). There are about 4 to 16 times as many questions in the GMAC's question pool as there are in any given test, which means that every test you take will be different. Tests 1 and 2 draw from a (gigantic!) pool of about 1,500 questions, and tests 3, 4, 5, and 6 draw from a more modest pool of about 400 questions each. To re-take your GMAT Prep tests, click "reset" in the lower-left hand corner of the GMAT Prep software window, but make sure to take screenshots of your previous test sessions beforehand--frequent screenshots are a good idea anyway because the software is prone to crashing and losing your data. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.

For those of you who are just getting started, here is the overall structure of the GMAT:

1) Analysis of an Argument Essay (AWA or Analytical Writing Assessment): 30 minutes, 1 question.
2) Integrated Reasoning (Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two Part Analysis): 30 minutes, 12 questions. Please note: unlike the Verbal and Quantitative sections, the IR section is not adaptive.
3) Optional 8-minute break
4) Quantitative Section (Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency): 75 minutes, 37 questions (2 minutes per question)
5) Optional 8-minute break
6) Verbal Section (Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction): 75 minutes, 41 questions (1.8 minutes per question)

Keep in mind that on the GMAT you cannot go back or skip any questions, and that the first 12-15 questions of the Verbal and Quantitative sections have the most impact on your score due to the adaptive scoring algorithm. A correct answer will yield a slightly harder question in most cases, and vice versa, and the GMAT will gradually determine your score as you go. The largest adjustments are made at the beginning of the test, which is why the first 1/3 of questions are so essential. Also, approximately 10 to 25% of the questions on the actual GMAT are experimental—you don’t know which ones they are, and they don’t count toward your score.

PROFOUND ANALYSIS OF OUR MODERN MATERIAL CULTURE

Vaclav Smil’s book is a fascinating and thorough analysis, on how the use of materials in our civilization has evolved from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The main argument is revealing: We, the collective humanity, have seen a relative dematerialization (less raw material per device) and declining energy intensity (energy expended per unit mass) driven by gradual improvements, substitutions, intensified recycling, and introduction of entirely new devices. On the other hand, the growing populations and improving quality of life have translated into a steadily rising demand for most traditional materials and greatly expanded production of new materials. Smil’s conclusion is that in all cases there has been no dematerialization in absolute terms at any national or the global level.

Smil displays a polymath’s knowledge of technology, economics, history, and policy. Be warned: The book is filled with data, and must be read thoroughly. Expect a whirlwind of units for mass, power, and energy. The data are not always presented attractively: Often they are recited in the text, making dense reading. Arrangements in graphs or tables would make a mush easier way to absorb the massive amount of information presented and interpreted.

Starting with the use of all materials over the course of human history, Smil concentrates on the prevalent materials of our material culture: Metals (steel, aluminum), biomass (timber, paper), plastics, glass and cement, fertilizers, industrial gases, and semiconductors (silicon.)

I found reading this book an exhilarating experience: I literally could not put it down, and I heavily annotated my copy. The arguments were compelling and well substantiated. My main criticism has to do with not bringing into the picture the technical capabilities of modern composites and catalysts, and with the apparent lack of the materials selection ideas presented by Mike Ashby and his colleagues at Cambridge in the last twenty years.

I would also identify a full absence of discussing sustainability, especially as driven by the possibility of global climate change. Clearly absolute dematerialization and global climate change have little to do with relative dematerialization, given the fact we all live in a finite world enclosed by a finite atmosphere. Relative dematerilization may be good for national policy but not so for global issues facing our collective humanity.

A fascinating account by professor Smil on global material extraction, use, and after-use through the centuries, and sobering thoughts on ecological pressures and future developments. The large middle part of the book is digested with difficulty; the very detailed number crunching is overwhelming. One comes away wiser, however. Exhaustively referenced, including many web links. Less appreciated: the price is steep, non-functional index at the end of the book,(the Kindle option bar activated TOC works), editing errors at times. Recommended for those who want a higly detailed view on the subject.

What do we do when we run out of Smil?

Smil looks at economies their cities, machines, high-ways, farms, vehicles, airplanes and he finds music in statistics. Tonages, gallons, watts, Joules, Newtons and populations. He must compose the score of this music in his head. Musical though made of numbers not numerical, instinctive not contrived. This latest of Smil’s brilliant books repeats statistical music we are familiar with from earlier studies but this work is more extreme, Smil breaks into a dance celebrating his fond dream of de-materialization. In earlier books such as the recent “Should we Eat Meat” Smil has made clear his distaste for greed and extravagance. We humans, especially Americans indulge ourselves. We needn’t eat steak at every meal, drive there ton SUV’s. His statistic crowded studies should be effective because he employs “science” and skirts tiresome scolding’s we have become immune to. De-materialization brings on excitement. The music of statistics isn’t enough to accompany man’s great accomplishments. De-materialization promises technical ecstasy. Lighter and lighter aluminum beer cans. 85 grams for the first, now only 12.75 grams. More and more powerful yet lighter internal combustion engines. Jets and rockets so powerful they may overshoot outer space. The facts are assembled and referenced in studies that make your head spin as Smil accelerates intricate numerical observations. Sadly the de-materialization dance ends in a somber switch as Smil accepts defeat switching from ever lighter beer cans, jet engines and computers to what we strangle and clog our roads with, huge heavy cars.
Smil carefully documents their ungainly mass as dependent on the price of oil, like a biologist charting the size of pigeons and the acorn crop they feed on. This part of the story leaves Smil crestfallen. This disappointment after what can be done by de-materialization. In a later chapter Smil disagrees with our perennial mongers of shortages. “We are soon to run out of …..” our real dilemma is more complicated for our end will not come from exhaustion. We can mine scrap, dig deeper, invent substitutes. We suffer self inflicted damage; struggle to make ourselves fat and unhappy. Reading his rebuttals to those predicting exhausting oil, gas, phosphate, copper etc. I found another worry; running out of Vaclav Smil. Born in 1948 how many more years of wisdom can we expect?
This book is not perfect, Smil is a carrier of a modern sickness, the over use of initials. This leaves the reader out in a wilderness; what does this mean? How can the author be proud of switching to code when he could remain with well understood English?

The Tao..who am I to review this?

This is quite a task, reviewing any interpretation of the Tao. It has been translated, interpreted, had interpretations reinterpreted...and so on. The Sacred Way is the one that was around the house when I was a kid, and though I have enjoyed many versions since, and find that some have more clarity, this is the one that ties my decades together most completely. And that is the essence of the Tao; no right, no wrong interpretation. Just be.

Great intro to Project Management

I had to use this book for a class in Project Management and this was required reading. The "10 Minute Guide to Project Management book is very concise, to the point and yet it is not dry were I lost interest in reading it. In fact, if one really takes what the author writes to heart, they will glean much in a short amount of time.

Remember, this book is NOT all-inclusive and for the low price one shouldn't expect it to be. However, it is time well spent in reading it.
