About the Author

Emil J. Posavac (Ph.D., University of Illinois, Champaign) is professor of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago where he has served as director of the Applied Social Psychology Program and chairman of the Psychology Department. He has consulted with a number of public and private organizations. He has published sixty papers and chapters, edited or co-edited six volumes on program evaluation and applied social psychology, and written numerous evaluation reports for health care and educational institutions. He is currently completing a textbook (with Eugene B. Zechmeister) on statistical analysis based on emerging orientations that emphasize a more complete understanding and presentation of data. He is a member of the American Psychological Society, the Society for the Advancement of Social Psychology, and the American Evaluation Association, among other groups. In 1990, he was awarded the Myrdal Award by the American Evaluation Association for his contributions to the advancement of program evaluation practice.

Raymond G. Carey (Ph.D., Loyola University of Chicago) is principal of R. G. Carey Associates. He was the vice president of Parkside Associates, Inc., a member of the Lutheran General Health Care System (now Advocate Health Care). Widely published in the fields of health services and quality assurance, Dr. Carey has consulted on employee attitudes and quality assurance to hospitals throughout the U.S. In addition, he was a member of the Technical Advisory Panel of the Post-Acute Care Study for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He teaches quality improvement procedures for hospital managers seeking to improve the quality of their health services. Carey is the author of Managing to Win: Evaluating the Use of Human Resources in Health Care Organizations and Measuring Quality Improvement in Healthcare: A Guide to Statistical Process Control Applications (with Robert C. Lloyd).

Beautiful, complex fiction, truer than nonfiction

This brilliant novel about a survivor of the 9/11 destruction of the Twin Towers is one of the best books written by an amazingly gifted writer. Catherine Ryan Hyde writes with an emotional fluency that is breathtaking in its simplicity and depth. I have read just about everything she's written and still can't figure out how she does it. I sit down to read one of her novels and literally can't put it down till it's done. This one had me awake till 4:30 a.m. because I cared so much about the people and events she created and described. I do not believe these people don't exist for real somewhere.

Russell, who works at a big advertising agency on the 104th floor of one of the towers, has managed to escape small-town life and his family, who he loves but can't tolerate. On September 11th, on his way out the door to a meeting at his place of work, he answers a phone call. His mom has died suddenly, leaving his disabled brother alone with only the neighbors to take care of him. Russell makes arrangements, hangs up the phone, then sees, through his living room window, as his place of work is destroyed. Although answering the phone saved his life,at this point, his life plunges into chaos. How he survives and who he meets along the way are metaphors for the aftermath of the Twin Towers tragedy. The book is an emotional roller-coaster through grief, responsibility, love, terrorism, cultural adaptation and tolerance, and, ultimately, the unique human condition of living in America in the post-9/11 years.

Hyde does more than tell the story of the tragedy through the eyes of a survivor. She dwells very little on the actual details of the terrorist attack. The impact on the characters in the story tells more about the events during and afterward than a mere factual account. The emotional history of the event is Hyde's main focus.

Hyde's language is pitch-perfect. When a middle-eastern person is speaking in the story, I hear the accent of the character in my head; when the character is from Kansas or New York or somewhere else, that's also evident, though I couldn't point to any particular word or phrase that creates that impression.

Unlike many "free books for Kindle" on Amazon, Hyde's are always, always, edited perfectly. Fussy readers (like me) will not be offended by grammar, punctuation, or usage errors. She is a master of her art in every way, including cosmetic details that matter so much to the flow and readability of a novel.

After having read this book and most of her other ones, I am a fan for life. Do yourself a favor and read this one, whether you read any of her others or not. I'm betting you'll be hooked.

A Wonderful Read!

I loved this story. I am 95% finished with it and decided to write a review before I forget because this story deserves to be recognized. As the mom of a special needs young adult, I could totally relate to the way that Ben, the special needs brother, handled life's situations. But, the story is so much more and that is what I did not expect. What a beautiful love story between a man and a woman! I loved how the storyline developed. I liked the way it went back and forth between past and present to explain the relationship between the two brothers. I loved everything about this book. I look forward to reading more by this author!

I consumed the book in less than a day, and the following quotes might just say why much better than I ever could. (I don't write good.)

There is a dearth of modern texts that treat this realm with due respect anymore-or possibly it is that other texts are aimed at larger -and so less rogorous-markets. Thank heavens someone is still publishing books like this. Attix has done a commendable job here. He pays attention to detail and accuracy. His inclusions are commendable-especially when he covers the Kramer spectrum-you don't get much of that anywhere except references to Kramers original papers! (or a 'result' quoted) here he actually gives an analysis cum derivation. The whole book is commendable and would sit as possibly 'the' contemporary classic on radiological physics.

If this had extensive 'practice problems' (a la Hasegawas text some may know of) then it would surely be also 'the' book to assign for a decent course on radiological physics/radiation measurement. Unfortunately not so. Still the overall rigour and treatment is worth 5 stars from any constellation.

Thoroughly recommend-a breath of fresh air with real physics.

Very good book if you are a Medical Physicist. But my old book is only 5 years old and the glue in the binding is so brittle, that whole pages are coming out.

About the Author
Ricky has over 30 years in maintenance and reliability as a maintenance manager, maintenance supervisor, maintenance training specialist, field engineer, maintenance mechanic, maintenance consultant and is a well known published author. Ricky has worked with maintenance organizations in hundreds of facilities, industrial plants, ships, etc, world wide in developing reliability, maintenance and technical training strategies.

Prior to joining Allied Reliability in 2008, Ricky worked as a professional maintenance employee for Exxon Company USA, Alumax (this plant was rated the best in the world for over 18 years), Kendall Company, and Hercules Chemical providing the foundation for his reliability and maintenance experience.

Ricky is the co-author of “Rules of Thumb for Maintenance and Reliability Engineers”, “Lean Maintenance” and “Industrial Repair, Best Maintenance Repair Practices”. Ricky also writes for different magazines during the past 20 years on technical, reliability and maintenance subjects.

Ricky holds certification as Certified Plant Maintenance Manager from the Association of Facilities Engineering as well as a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional from the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals.

Ricky lives in Charleston, SC with his wife. Aside form spending time with his 3 children and 3 grandchildren, Ricky enjoys kayaking, fishing, hiking and archaeology.

Mr. Mobley is president and CEO of Integrated Systems Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn. He has written numerous publications on such topics as plant performance, maintenance engineering, maintenance management, and predictive maintenance. He is also a contributing editor for Plant Services magazine.

When ever you ask an advice of how to improve your knowledge in any particular subject, and to become professional on it, the first thing they will tell you: learn from experts, read from the leaders on their filed.

I red many books in Reliability and Maintenance engineering, nothing is like this book, Ricky Smith, and Keith Mobley, include all the information we need as a Maintenance and Reliability professionals on this book.

It contains the information you need about maintenance management, preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, KPI, industrial machinery, and check lists. It is not a theoretical but it's something practical use can bring it into practice easily.

I never let that book out of my desk, I always refer to it, and I used it as a reference on my papers, presentations and business cases.

I recommend every maintenance and reliability professional to get that book.

An Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for new reliability engineers, experienced reliability engineers, and even maintenance managers. For the new reliability engineer, it gives good introductions into what reliability engineering is and general descriptions of how major pieces of equipment work and malfunction. For the experienced reliability engineer, it provides details on how to correctly perform Root Cause Analysis and FMEA, and to how to develop and track metrics. For the maintenance manager, it describes how reliability engineering fits into the maintenance organization and how an effective reliability program can reduce safety and environmental risk, increase run time, and save your company money. If your company is in need of a reliability program or has one that needs improvement, this is the book to get.

Color coding the different parts in this edition was a great idea....the first time I was introduced to the book I fell in love with it and knew I needed my own copy.

Every teacher needs one!

I have struggled with classroom management for 5 years (since I began).I've taught High School and now Middle School (I have more patience with Middle School). It's a surprise that I haven't burnt myself out! I yelled, I was sarcastic, I was insulting at times... it was bad. I went to a couple workshops that helped, but this book has it all! I bought it and placed post its on all the situations I've encountered with students. During the summer I plan to study the strategies that placed post its on. VERY GOOD TO KEEP ON THE SHELF READY TO GO!

About the Author

Allen Cadwallader is Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He is the editor of Essays from the Fourth International Schenker Symposium, Volume 1 (2008) and Trends in Schenkerian Research (1990). His articles have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Intégral, Theory and Practice, and Journal of Music Theory.

David Gagné is Associate Professor of Music Theory at Queens College, City University of New York. He is the coeditor of Structure and Meaning in Tonal Music: Festschrift in Honor of Carl Schachter (2006). His articles and reviews have appeared in journals and books including The Music Forum, Music Theory Spectrum, Indiana Theory Review, Intégral, Schenker Studies 2, and Trends in Schenkerian Research.

Schenkerian analysis text strong on presentation, conten

This text is intended for graduate students in music (and perhaps for advanced undergraduates as well). It replaces Allen Forte and Steven Gilbert's Schenker text of ca. 1979 as an authoritative introduction to the themes and tools of Schenker's way of looking at the music of the Western Classical tradition. Long considered a "secret code" impenetrable to outsiders, Schenkerian analysis has at last been accepted as defining the mainstream of music theory in this country, thanks to the widespread availability since the '80s of English translations of his most important books, _Harmonielehre_, _Kontrapunkte_, the _Five Graphic Analyses_, and Schenker's late summary of his techniques and theories, _Der Freie Satz_. Cadwallader and Gagne succeed where Forte and Gilbert failed to find a clear, uncluttered style of presentation and a tone that is suited to the level of preparation one is likely to find among the target student population. A good test of this boo! k's success is that it is _almost_ usable by students with little or no prior specialized background; it succeeds to a remarkable degree in making Schenkerian theory a tool for musicians at large, rather than for specialists. A glossary of specialized terms would have been useful, as well as more extensive treatment of certain topics such as mixture about which Schenker had quite idiosyncratic ideas, but all in all this is a teacher-friendly, student-friendly contribution to the study of music theory which should be known to everyone in the discipline.

Best introduction to Schenkarian Analysis

I agree whole hearted with Perry's review, but give this book 5 Stars as it really is the best introduction to this subject. The book is clear and well laid out but it could benefit with more details on larger forms and completed analyses. That being said you should be able to tackle Schenker's books and analyse, and get into Salzer's Structrual Hearing and Forte's work after completing this book.

I honest felt I had a better understanding of music form and structure after using this book, and this of course is the point of Schenkarian Analysis, it's not just a thoery, it is supposed to be useful in understanding musical form and structure; which is easily forgotten with other books on the subject.

Good content but very poorly organized :-(

This is a widely used text and the authors certainly are recognized authorities in the field. The overall content is broad and appropriate, however, the text is very disorganized and poorly written. There is no sense of coherent progression of concepts and the authors frequently include extraneous information which is distracting. The approach attempts to break down the various aspects of Schenkerian Analysis by separately discussing bass lines, melodic structures, formal design, etc. but it is very unclear as to the relationships of the various aspects and is inconsistent in it's own use of the analytical language. The sequencing of the text makes it difficult to glean a holistic understanding of the method. In a graduate course I took recently, the professor spent large portions of class just answering questions about places we were confused by the text. A lot of students just took lecture notes and stopped reading the text all together.
